Re: Tim's First EM Journey. Fixing a Gottlieb Surfer.

Whatever burned it up happened a some time ago. It's been like this for a while. I am going through the entire assembly and cleaning it up now. I haven't discovered any easy way to take it apart though. I don't think there is an easy way. :( I will have to order some parts shortly from PBR, so I'll ...

Tim's EM Journey. Fixing a Gottlieb Surfer.

Thread renamed. It didn't take long to discover the issue with 10B. 20190316_130342.jpg Is there an easy way to take this entire assembly off? There are quite a few rusted springs that look to be on the brink of snapping, and it's just plain gross to look at so I'd like to give it an Evaporust bath....

Re: EM help. Surfer

Unsure if your machine has its Instruction Card. For Surfer and Surf Champ, the Instruction cards for 3-ball or 5-ball state: BONUS VALUE DOUBLES ON LAST BALL OR BY HITTING EITHER SIDE ROLLOVER WHEN LIT. EITHER SIDE ROLLOVER TRIPLES BONUS VALUE IF DOUBLE IS LIT. The Double Bonus Control Relay (11B ...

Re: EM help. Surfer

If you stick your finger underneath where you can’t see. Parallel to to the switch blades you can push in the trip that will activate that black bar. There should be a wing nut at each end of that bank of relays. Back it off a turn or ten (you might need to/want to just take them off while you work...

Re: EM help. Surfer

This game is working now. It is fully playable. Scoring works with only one exception, 3X. 2X works perfectly, but I do not understand how 3X is activated. I have read that it will only enable on ball 5, but I still can't get it to come on. Using the schematics, I see that 2X and 3X is controlled by...

Re: Women's Flip Frenzy Tournament - Friday, March 8th @ House of TARG

My daughter is 7. When asked if she wanted to play, she replied "Do I have to play all 3 balls?"

Her distraction level is still high. Give me 3 more years to get her pinball focused (if she wants).

Re: Hack of the day - Bride of Pinbot

Nice! I was waiting for this Hack of the day. I had taken a look previously at this BOP. I suspected the matrix as well since it was the entire column that was out. Wiring was fresh and clean with zero hacks that I could see in the backbox. My main focus was in the backbox. I did look under the play...

Re: EM help. Surfer

I reversed the plunger that hits the chimes. Guess what? The chimes are now working! Such a stupid little thing. I can only guess that it was taken apart once upon a time and haven't worked since then. If this had not been my first and only EM I would have just said to myself "Self, those plung...

Re: EM help. Surfer

Alright, I have 30 whole minutes to troubleshoot this. The contacts in the score reel are definitely making good contact. In case they weren't, I alligator clipped the contact closed. I then activated one of the 'rubber' kickers to score 10 points. The points counted and no chime sounded. I did this...

I was more into Knight Rider. If I was to pick from your list I'd go with CONAN, but only if it was the comic book version.

Re: EM help. Surfer

http://www.eurekamodern.com/nutone%20solenoids-350.jpg Do your chimes plungers look more like the ones on the right or the left? If the nylon plug is missing you might sometimes get sound. But not often. Sometimes the dampening foam the plungers land back on gets sticky. That relay in the head. Giv...

Re: EM help. Surfer

Yes, that is the switch I thought we were talking about. It is the one that I mentioned I flexstoned. I will try adjusting it tomorrow. Unfortunately my kids are in bed by 8PM and it's not possible to work on a EM pinball machine in the house. The sounds resonate too much. Trying to fix a chime issu...

Re: EM help. Surfer

When you say the "EOS switch on the plunger" do you mean the score reel plunger? So when the score reel is rotating from 9 to 0 that plunger? The EOS is right at each score counter plunger itself. It opens every time the plunger goes in. This is not the 0 or 9 position switches. Understoo...

Re: EM help. Surfer

Does this also occur on Player-2? Reason I am asking: If I recall, most of those Gottlieb score counters have an EOS switch on the plunger that is normally closed, and it open when the score counter's plunger is almost bottomed-out - this is to ensure the counter properly advances, even if the impu...

Re: EM help. Surfer

The 10, 100 and 1000 points relays in the head each have one of their Normally Open contact pairs dedicated for their respective associated chimes. Make sure the contacts on these three relays are tight and properly gapped/adjusted. Good luck! -Sylvain. Thanks for the response Sylvain. I traced the...

Re: EM help. Surfer

Alright, now that I have the pin going through start up and resetting properly I've started focusing on other things. 1) Chimes. They are sporadic. I removed the chime unit and cleaned it out to make sure it wasn't gunked up. It is clean and smooth now. I understand that there is a "tens" ...

Re: Parts Tumbler Questions

I preferred corn media. I ran it dry. It doesn't turn everything that red walnut colour. I ran my machine in the garage. Usually for 8 hours at a time. You might need to run an extension cord to your shed to appease your wife.

I used to go all the time even back when it was behind Mcdonald's in the the strip mall Near the Museum. Use to go and play Street Fighter against the locals there for a change in competition from my Arcade (Wizard on Carling). Then when it moved to the other side of the Museum and I had my oldest ...

Re: EM help. Surfer

Success! I used my DMM to check the connectivity from the replay button. Traced it down to a closed switch on Ax that had no tone across the switch. Tweaked the contacts and voila! Game started! I was able to start a game. Even played a two player game with my son. Now that things are working proper...

I will go through and tighten all the relay contacts stacks. I have been tightening the ones I have been adjusting. Basically, if I remove the cotter pin then I tighten the switch stacks, check for proper wipe/gap and then adjust if necessary. I even place a white piece of paper between the switch s...

Hmm... I'll post some photos soon. My REPLAY BUTTON has just stopped working. It was working 3 posts ago and now it's not doing anything. It was originally not doing anything and I had fixed it (at least I thought I had). I did just replace my V relay... I wonder if that has something to do with it....

Re: EM help. Surfer

The pop bumper has a relay that fires the bumper. So don’t just look at the bumper, check the associated relay. It will be mounted underneath the playfield. Check the other bumpers as well. Sometimes they are in pairs. Both fire at the same time. If one has a stuck switch the other is on as well. I...
