Re: What did you do today in the hobby?

A little board work tonight. Damn, do I ever love this new desoldering/soldering station . It's making quick work out of what used to be a real pain in the butt. Bally -35 MPU board had some crispy old single-wipe IC sockets causing intermittent crashes. Replaced them with proper tooled ones and res...

You don't need that from Digikey. This one will work equally well and it five bucks. Don't worry about the different shape, it still works great: https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/e ... 93-1074-ND

Re: BLACK HOLE SPEECH CHIP NEEDED

As for the question of how difficult? Very difficult. Other unobtainium audio chips such as the reverb chip on the squalk and talk are (relatively) easy to emulate, because they're performing a straightforward transformation on an audio signal. On the other hand, the SC-01 is an analog audio chip wh...

That looks like it could be based around these lit switches available through Ultimarc: https://www.ultimarc.com/ultralux.html There appear to be several sources, here is another: https://www.arcaderenovations.com/led-illuminated-arcade-pushbuttons.html You can even get them on amazon.ca for not too...

No, those are the power resistors on the rectifier board.

Max temperature 45.3°C after several hours under load. I would say that's a major improvement!

Re: Bally Controlled Lamp Flicker

Correct- it was the Rottendog supply with a GBPC2506W bridge rectifier and no heatsink at all, driving incandescent lamps. The new one is a GBPC3504W driving LEDs. I'll put the FLIR on it tonight. In the meantime, check out R11 on the MPU board! Smokin'! D19B8D0B-3F4D-4685-8C59-F35E559A3530.jpeg D56...

Re: Bally Controlled Lamp Flicker

Solved! Two things that had to be fixed: 1) Shorted bridge rectifier on the rectifier board was causing only a half wave to hit the lights. This fixed a few things: -increased brightness of all of the controlled lamps -increased stability of all the lamps: no dimming or flicker -no more hum from tra...

Re: Bally Controlled Lamp Flicker

Eliminated headers and PIAs as the issue.

I'm taking a look at the power supply now- the 6.5VDC is testing far too low. I've got a rectifier to replace before anything else happens.

Re: Bally Controlled Lamp Flicker

To answer your questions first: They are LEDs, but I have installed resistors and SCR Iₕ doesn't appear to be an issue. My thoughts: Pretty sure I've ruled out headers A5J4 and A4J1; a good poke/wiggle/shimmy doesn't affect the end result. I can probably rule out A5J4 entirely; I replaced both parts...

Bally Controlled Lamp Flicker

So some of the controlled lamps on my Centaur 2 are misbehaving. When they are supposed to be off, they flicker in a repeating pattern. They work fine when they should be on. This doesn't only happen with these two lamps; other lamps are affected depending on what's happening in the game. I recorded...

Re: New pinball arcade opening this fall

Welp, it's Friday afternoon and I drove down from Ottawa after work. Sitting in my truck in the parking lot. The door is locked despite the "now open" sign in the window. Damn. This is prime time and it was a long drive. :(

Nothing comes even close to Waze on a smartphone. I know it isn't ideal for you, but in terms of real-time updates and dynamic routing it's really the way to go. It has leapfrogged a generation beyond any standalone unit.

Re: What did you do today in the hobby?

Lots of fixes today. 7-digit display in Centaur was acting unpredictably so I rebuilt the headers. Fixed some issues but when warm the display was still losing every digit except one. Replaced the two transistors for that digit and bam- back in business. While I had the board out, replaced the 1/4W ...

Any of you have one of these for building new IDC header connectors that I can either borrow or buy off of you?
