Best lubricant for clockwork/gears?

Postby semicolin » Tue May 21, 2019 9:59 pm

So I have an interflip dragon with a clockwork gearing mechanism to step down the ratio from the drive motor. The old lube was pretty gummy so I cleaned it out, and then I relubed it with a silicone-based spray lube that has worked well for me. It played great for a couple of months but I guess some of the light weight oils in it have started to evaporate and it's gumming back up again.

What's the best lightweight non-evaporating lubricant, available in Canada, that is appropriate for this application? I don't want to be be cracking this thing open every couple of months to relubricate.

You need something super-light and with stability. I would probably recommend a Silicon-based lubricant, e.g. https://www.homehardware.ca/en/311g-3-in-1-silicone-lubricant/p/8640278 as these don't tend to gum-up the way mineral oils do. You could also go with a dry lubricant such as graphite, e.g. https://www.homehardware.ca/en/325g-liquid-wrench-dry-graphite-lubricant/p/8640878

Not pimping Home Hardware or these specific products, BTW, just examples!

I'll give the 3-in-1 a shot. I tried some other brand that was a heavier weight but it's biting me in the arse now.

Lest it need repeating, Astroglide is terrible lube for *all* applications, including the ones it's intended for.

Not to mention "Condom Compatible" is NOT a feature that one wants in a Pinball!
