How do I take an EM lockbar receiver apart

Post by Fifty »

Hi guys,

I'm doing some clean-up on my Surfer. The lockbar receiver was a rusty, corroded, ooze-filled mess. I removed it from the pin and I've been using my dremel to sand it down. The one side is coming out great, but the lockbar fin is in the way on the other side.

Are these things riveted together? Does it come apart? How?

Oh, and what's the best way to polish one of these up? I don't think Evaporust is going to cut it. I am not looking for a mirror shine, I just want to take the surface crud off. No, I do not have a sand blaster. This is all manual labour (plus Dremel tool).

Thanks!

For receivers I start with a brass wirewheel. If the rust/crud is stubborn I switch to steelwheel.

Thanks Rob. Are you using a Dremel with a brass wirewheel? I bought a bunch of these but I find the brass wires fly out even on low speeds. How does it come apart?

I don't know how to take apart that brand of lockbar- only bally's & williams. 🙃

I use a large wheel on the grinder. I find the dremels fall apart way too fast.

These do not come apart without a fight and some damage. The problem is that the parts are held in place by pressed rivets. Just the handle for unlocking the bar is one big pressed shaft.

If no sandblast, use a brass wire brush, or even better, 3M scotchbrite wheels to buff it out as much as possible, then soak it for a while in Evaporust or oxalic acid. That will get the rust where you can't see it.

Then, spend glorious hours with buffing wheels.

Once you knocked off the rust and it is bare metal, make sure you oil it so that it doesn't rapidly rust back again. I have used different things, such as both types of linseed oil. Raw linseed oil is great but stays oily a long time. Boiled linseed oil dries quickly and works great, BUT... it is VERY flammable. If you take the rag you used to wipe it with, bunch it up and leave it in the sun, POOF. Fire. But if it "breathes", no problem.

Thanks for the advice. I thought that it might rust up again quickly too, so I ended up waxing everything. I didn't want to use any oils. I used the XXX Carnuba Wax that Adriano use to use on his projects. Hopefully this will help.
