Parts Tumbler Questions

Post by Hammerhead »

I'm new to the parts tumbling scene and had a few questions for the veterans:
- what tumbling media to you find gets the best results?
- how long do you tumble your parts?
- do you add anything to the media (Flitz, Novus, etc.)?

- Crushed walnut shells - some pet stores sell it for bedding or you can buy on Amazon etc..
- I have tumbled parts for over a week but usually a couple days at least
- I add Novus 3, Flitz and Autosol depending on the situation

I run mine in my garage so noise is not a problem.

I preferred corn media. I ran it dry. It doesn't turn everything that red walnut colour. I ran my machine in the garage. Usually for 8 hours at a time. You might need to run an extension cord to your shed to appease your wife.

Have tried the walnut media from princess auto and cabelas. I still have most of it all in storage because I found they are not coarse enough.

Petsmart used to sell a brand named Kaydee OR Kaylee but they don’t seem to have it anymore and the new stuff they have is like sand with powder.

My plan is to check a couple pet stores next time I go down to the USA to see what is available.

Amazon and even eBay have lots of different choices but shipping is expensive.

YMMV of course.

One thought I had to try and deaden the noise is to put a Rubbermaid bin over the tumbler. Maybe something to try.

My wife called it "the noisy thing" when she couldn't remember what it was called. I put it in the basement beside the furnace and it is pretty hard to hear now. Two days works, if a part has lost its plating in my experience it hasn't helped much.

I tend to use my ultrasonic cleaner more than the tumbler as it does a better job on most parts and it is more wife friendly

I’ve got a Thumners Tumbler Ultra Vibe 10 parts tumbler if anyone needs one. Asking $60

OR....I’d trade it straight up for work done on my Pinbot: service the weak flippers, service the weak slingshots, fix an non-working outline switch.
