Aristocrat Shuffle Alley Revival

Post by mrmikeman »

I will be posting a bit of a blog on bringing this thing back to life. Not feeling like a full restoration at this point since it’s a garage game (due to the size). I do want make it somewhat nice however. It’s from 1979 from Williams(United). Runs on Sys4 boards.

First thing was to make an inventory of parts needed since it takes a few weeks to get them from PBR.

My plan of attack is to:
- Clean everything while disassembled. Much easier this way.
- Assemble the game and see what the scoop is with the boards. Do they boot? If not then repair. Address any technical issue (switches, coils, and lights)
- I am assuming the boards will need some connectors redone and re-pinned as well. Chip sockets will need to be replaced. Sparky did some of the leg work and replaced caps, fuse holders, NVRAM, and that damn interconnect that always fails.
- Convert the old high voltage displays to LED displays
- Convert all lighting to LED if possible - including pin lighting which is currently fluorescent tubes.
- Play!

The playfield and side rail had some sort of tar or paint spill on it. I carefully scraped all of it off.

Next I took a look at the mechs. Nothing broken and everything moves as it should but OMG so filthy it’s mind boggling.

I decided to take 1 mech out and just dump it assembled into the ultrasonic. Came out really nice. Rinsed and wiped dry right away to prevent the metal parts from rusting. I may try dunking in evaporust to remove the rust on the springs and rods.

Here you can see where I wiped the underside clean around where I removed the mech.

So last night I went to Princess Auto and got some Evaporust. Couldn’t find a long enough container but did give a try as much as I could. That stuff is crazy awesome! Found a better container today and the same parts are now fully soaking until tomorrow.

It completely freed up the seized levellers. Woooo!

One time I did not soak the whole leg and it left a demarcation I could not get rid of afterwards. Not a big deal, but I wished I had not made that mistake.

Thanks to Sparky who sent me the bolts I forgot I was able to assemble the game. Also started cleaning the sides. A lot of paint was missing on the head but you couldn’t tell from the brown nicotine staining.

Thanks for the heads up. The metal plate I was just curious. I already have a stainless shiny new replacement on the way. The legs I intend to paint black or grey.

Don't leave your evaporust in an open container when soaking parts. That stuff evaporates and it's gone. If you don't have an enclosed container, at least put a plastic sheet on top.

If you wan to do legs, get a length of PVC drain pipe and glue on an end cap. Insert leg, dump in evaporust, done. Best part is you can save your evaporust in there by just snapping on another end cap.

Not even planning to do that kind of restauration, but I still like the idea! Maybe I'll just make one to carry legs around, with some added foam inserts :-)

Spray Nine is pretty good, but even better is TSP. A pound of powder lasts years. I used that on one apartment I rented in Montreal and the tobacco tar slid off the wall in sheets.

So yesterday i started changing sockets on the Main board. You know the sockets really suck when you can just pull out the chips with your fingers. The masked roms were shit. Black legs on the chips. A bunch of those corroded legs just fell off too. Ordered a new set of ROMS from Hobbyroms and also a diagnostic thingamabob for early Wms boards from Pincoder.

Got the peg legs cleaned, sanded, painted, and installed. Also continuing with the pin mech cleaning. Can only do 2 a day since they need to soak in evaporust overnight and I use a small container. 3 more days to go.

Great thread!

Grossssssss but good to know!

So I finished changing out the sockets on the boards and installed new ROMS thanks to Hobbyroms. Still not booting.

Now I have to wait for my troubleshooting ROM from Pincoder. Should get here by early next week at the latest.

Also waiting for my parts order from PBR which should also arrive by early next week.

Progress will be stalled until then. Might be time to start on STTNG... Hmmm.
