No problem Tim, you are always wecome. But, I've recently had hernia surgery... so you'll still have to drive here and dig a game out of my basement

Just a little teaser.
I airbrushed some of the darker blue areas that were uneven last night. Then I started aplying some of the rub-on transfers. I love this stuff!!! :D

This isn't fully complete yet, of course.
But here's a really early pic before any work was done.
Soon, there won't be anything we won't be able to repair :)
What I love about this process is that it is very close to how the original art was produced (at least in principle).

Once I finish painting the wooden rails I'll get this dropped into the machine. At least Quicksilver should be ready before the weekend.

With any luck, I can have Seawitch re-assembled by December. Looking forward to a good Christmas! :D

I ordered a big lot of replacement flippers a long time ago.
I have both styles. There is the complete 1 piece assembly which is good for Stern and Bally, and just the plastic that fits over the metal shoe (for early Stern Type 1 games like Stars, Dracula etc).

Marcos is where I got the 1-piece style and I think Pinball Life is where I got the plastic-only type. I think that Terry recently also added the entire assembly for Type 1 games... this includes new metal shoe+shaft with the plastic bat, but it is expensive... double the price.

Yeah, previous owner included it with the machine. Might have to throw it into a frame and up on the gameroom wall

I wonder if the original artist ever got any recognition for that... or whether they even ever saw it?

I love spotting the influences and ripoffs.
Space Invaders rips off H.R. Giger.
Viper is a nod to Hajime Sorayama. (I say nod given how accomplished Parkinson is)
Barracora also goes Giger. https://narrativeinart.files.wordpress. ... giger1.jpg

People played so loose with copyright up until the time in the 80s where cocaine started getting really popular. (just a coincidence, I'm sure)
My favourite example is the inclusion of "FIFA World Cup" on the Bally Kick Off backglass. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1ca4djDktsQ/ ... 224604.jpg
Can you imagine someone putting that on their product unlicensed these days?

I got Quicksilver back together.
After a few adjustments it seems to be playing very well. The only big issue is that my small 10pt switches are all non functioning. I will have to track that down, but all the important stuff is 100%.

I should be able to shift efforts over to Seawitch soon.

Quicksilver is a challenging taskmaster of a game: the diagonal drops in front of the flippers says “try me “ but harsh reality says “oh fuck”

Finally finished the 3rd and final sister.
I am waiting on a replacement apron decal from Australia because the colours on the one I got were not correct.

Otherwise, Seawitch is complete and now sitting next to her sisters, Quicksilver and Stargazer.

It's been a much longer process than I assumed.... and a lot of other projects got squeezed in between, but that's pinball baby!
It's allowed me to expand my classic stern collection and knowledge quite extensively.

Here are a few recent photos:

What a dream lineup! Congrats!

Did these early Sterns really have a period where people didn't care about them so much? Because I have heard people talk about this as a renaissance of appreciation for them. Either way, lovely.

Absolutely, most Sterns didn’t get any respect well into about 10 years ago. It was part of the reason I became a Stern collector: they were cheaper than Bally’s but often just as good (if not better!)

The hype cycle for Stargazer started a few years ago and Seawitch is well on its way too. Truly rare titles like Viper and Ironmaiden have always had high value but Stern addiction is more than just price speculation: Sterns have unique gameplay and layout, so I’m really glad I went down the path of collecting them, even if it was initially Because I couldn’t afford a Fathom or a Centaur

It does seem funny, doesn't it?
I came a little late to the Classic Bally/Stern side of the hobby. At first I was grabbing plenty of Bally games. They were pretty good. Few of them held me for too long though.
Then I took the plunge and got a Meteor and that was it. Meteor is a pretty basic Stern by comparison to some of these other titles.. but even that was far more exciting/exhilerating than most classic Bally. They are faster, have (arguably) better sound effects and the layouts and artwork are fantastic.

I think it's just an ongoing stygma that these games have always had.
They were considered the "cheap" alternative to the big boys when they were new. That seems to have stuck.
Only renewed interest in pinball and a very limited supply of older games has drawn them out into the limelight.

Today, I've sold off all my classic Bally with the exception of Fathom and Eight Ball.
They have all been replaced by Stern machines of the same era. And, these games that once traded for a few hundred bucks, are now in the thousands.
I still think that a machine like Big Game (for example) offers some of the best bang for buck in this segment and can sometimes be had for as little as $1K in average condition.
Luckily I have all the ones I want now; and the truly rare Stern machines are not always the ones with the best gameplay anyway... so I won't be chasing those.
