Fixing yellowed plastic topper

Postby Bagdad » Thu Jan 25, 2018 8:18 pm

I used the Peroxide cream technique and I'm pretty happy with the results. This topper was yellowed like an old smoker finger. ;)

--> Paint the cream with a brush, then leave it in direct sunlight for the day, in a sealed transparent plastics bag.

You can find the cream in the "teinture à cheveux" section at Jean Coutu. ;) It's one of the ingredient used to bleach hair.

Also, don't forget to masking tape any decals, and make sure that the cream does not dry...And rince after...

The same technique and use this stuff. It also works with yellowed playfield plastics. Don't get it on the inked side.

I have a bottle of this stuff (the same as Chris Silver) that I use on old NINTENDO stuff. If anyone wants to try it just PM me and I'll give you the bottle.

Does this work with translucent clear plastic?

You can do some research, but from what I've seen on the Net, I would say no.

Can it be used on Donald Trump's skin to turn him white again? You would probably have to leave a hole in the bag so he can breathe though.

I did some quick research. The technique Bagdad used is called retr0bright, see the official site here http://www.retr0bright.com/
The trick was found in 2008 by accident and later refined. They say the yellowing is likely caused by the bromine used as fire retardant in the plastic.
This site says it does not work on clear pastic, worst it makes the plastic milky https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... hHpNoLcEAM
Too bad, I really wanted this to work.

These are the active ingredients of the retr0brite recipe.
They later added thickening ingredients to make it a gel.
http://www.retr0bright.com/make.html
The hair salon product is the same idea but it is already in gel form and sold in one bottle.
In this case, they say to make sure there are no other additives like terpene which can damage the plastic.
