Nineball... try to make the magic happen again

Postby redketchup » Tue May 15, 2018 2:36 pm

I bought a Nineball at Allentown this years.

This is one of the stern I want to try and have time to understand it at home. Pretty rare classic stern to find.

My exemple had good and bad things...

The Good...

Play perfect! 100% everything work like it should and a lot of board work have been done by the prior owner. Sound board recap, some connector redone, memory cap, new C23 cap, etc...
Cab is pretty solid, I had to reglue the head border, but the rest is good.
Come with the replacement for the light grid
Coin door is straight with no ding or big puck
spinner is ther
Good pop bumper cap
All classic stern board are there and working

The bad...

Playfeild is worn real bad in the bonus area
Insert are lifting in couple place and couple are burn
Backglass is flaking
Plastic set broke and crack
Drop target replace by the wrong one (8 bank and solo bank)

The restoration process is engage...

I already bought a new backglass from John Greatwich
A new plastics set from CPR
Foound the drop target for the solo bank at allentown
replacement drop target order from Marco
New playfield glasses in stock at home
and I have a pretty good lead for a playfeild in better shape then mine. I will keep you inform.

Some pics of it....

Agreed: An excellent example of Steve Kirk's genius, and not that commonly seen.

The 8-bank is the same one used in Flight 2000, which is very common (by Classic Stern standards!), so look for one of those. What is wrong with your current bank? Can you post a picture from below to show that?

My plan is to do some little thing until i see the other playfeild and decide which one i will restore... so today was the woodrail day and some hack remove on the coin door harness. Backbox white light panel clean and replace bulb with led. I will have to paint it, but later...

The new playfield story...

When i bought my Nineball, i knew the playfield was in really bad shape, so i try to source a better one.

I look on Pinside, RGP etc...

I found a discussion in RGP about NOS playfield people bought, but they never found the game to put in.

Someone post about a NOS Nineball playfield. So i decide to contact him via Pinside to know if he still have it...

« Hi Brian,
I just saw in RGP that you have or had an Nine ball playfeild...
Any chance you want to sell it?
Thank's Gino »

After i made my message, i realize it was an old post from 2014... so my expectation was very low and i was prepare to get a message givin me some shit about revive an old discussion from 2014, but the message was send, nothing I can do...

After a couple day, i got an answer...

« Ah, just a week ago I gave it up to a charity auction, sorry »

So Allentown was there and we are on for a 7 hour ride to get there. I talk about it with yellowmustard and paidge and Paidge convince me to recontact the guy on pinside to try to know where the playfield goes.

So after Atown, i take a chance and send him this...

« Really ? »

And the answer

« Yes, really and truly. April 21st we held a pinball tournament and all the proceeds from the tourney, auction, and donations went to John Miller. He is fighting stage IV kidney cancer. I gave up a NOS LOTR playfield, used Nine Ball playfield, used Bally Viking playfield and an original Nine Ball backglass. I believe Adam McKinnie won the auction for the Nine Ball playfield, but I don't remember for sure. »

So i decide to try contact Adam... i make research on pinside, but you can find someone with is real name, just his user name...

I finally found an Adam Mckinie on facebook, a competitive pinball player... i take a guest and send him a message...

« Hi Adam, Sorry to bother you, but Brian Bannon told me that you maybe buy a nine ball playfeild in an auction last 21 of april...
If you want to sell it, i just buy a completed nineball that really need new a playfeild.
Just let me know

Gino (aka redketchup on pinside) a classic stern lover »

And the answer...

« I did, I'll take some pictures of it when I get back home this weekend to show the shape it's in. I'll gladly sell it for whatever I paid for it at the charity auction plus shipping. »

So I got this pics couple day after

CB318452-A687-4726-AA29-8C9B9E2A72A6.jpeg

Playfield is a lot better then mine, and i will keep my game running during the process, which is a big plus.

After couples days of discussion about shipping, i finally get my tracking number yesterday...

I still can believe i found it this quick and for a reasonable price...

Here you go! Little bit of pinporn!

I’m really happy with my purchase, i just did a little bit of magic eraser to take pictures, will need a lot more cleaning and a good touch up job, but i should be able to make it look good again.

The playfeild resto start today...

First step, i decide to scan all the playfield area with insert, i will try to redo all the insert ring with the rub-on decal method.

After that, i remove the mylar around the pop bumber... 100% succes with the freeze method!

For poeple who asking, why removing the insert...

There is a couple raison. The first one is if you want to clearcoat your old classic stern playfeild, you have to reglue the insert. Stern use a real soft glue to glue the insert in the good old days... if you clearcoat over the insert without reglue it, your insert risk to move under the playfeild and make somekind of ghosting...

CF6C2283-4C22-4102-ABE8-FB50C7D3C977.jpeg

I had the problem with my first playfeild restoration, and i promise me to never do that again, but when i did my Viper, i didn’t want to completely stirp the playfeild and reglue the insert... the result is the pics above... so you need to reglue before you clearcoat with hard clearcoat. If your insert look really solide and stable... you have to reglue it!

Second raison is to make the insert flat again, when you remove it, it’s easy to sand it with some sandpaper and a flat surface... this is a pics of my gig for sanding my insert, just to be sure to make an 8 movement with the insert when you sand it to avoid sanding more side compare to the other. Your clearcoat will be a lot more flat if your insert are flat...

13DBBFF0-C412-4510-9003-8D70EAF91F3C.jpeg

The last one is the color, look at this two insert, they are from the same area, one sand and the other not... doesn’t look like the same color

I take to opportunity to paint the back of the playfeild, all the insert are remove, no chance to make a mess with the paint

I also make a little mod the preserve the wood where the rod to keep the playfeild up goes

And to finish today, how many of you get the sanding insert injury?

I sand my fingers tip after half of the insert sanding...

After i put the insert in the hole and make sure is flush with a metal ruler. You have to do your best to put it flush, but sometime is not so easy, a lot in and out fron top and bottom...
