My Project Fathom

Post by ShootAgain »

I ended up buying Drano’s “Fathom...if you can’t find one, build one” project from a friend.

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=19811&hilit=Fathom

The project came with a badly worn populated playfield and a brand new repro pf.
The cabinet has already been refurbished so the playfield swap is the only labour intensive work that still need to be done. I started planning the project and decided it would be easier to work on the old playfield first as all the parts and the harness are there. The plan is to have the original playfield working first before the swap so I wont be chasing ghosts and not knowing if the issues were there before the swap or caused by my own fault during the
process.

I saw on Pinside that one of our fellow maaca member was selling a set of playfield overlay for Fathom so I decided to give it a try since most of the top parts were already removed. I dont know how long it would take before I start the playfield swap so at least the original playfield will be presentable for the time being.

I started by sanding the playfield and reglued some loose inserts and finally cleared the inserts.

I decided to use the transluscent overlay so had to paint the playfield in white for the backing.

Here is the end result.
Not perfect but way better than it was before.
Next steps will be a set of insert decals and a playfield protector on top of that.
Should be good enough for a while.

That's awesome. It's one of those projects that are worth finishing and not like busting your balls doing a simple half ass machine. Good luck and have fun. :-)

OK I have to say I will be following this one. Not sure if you know but I was part of the pick-up process of this Pin, well another pick up.. I was at Drano's to pick up another Pin that came on the underground Pin express from MTL and I seen all the parts pieces playfields and such in person mostly in Boxes. I must say the Cab looked awesome and Drano did a awesome job on it as well as the other items he had collected for this project. But I must say I thought to myself (No FN way) would I take that on. However I think you are going about it in the right way and I heard during the trade off you have original Fathom close by and local you can use to compare to so just by what I see so far Hat's off! looks great and I would think it will be up and running in that shiny new Cab with all the other bits in no time! Cheers
