Old radio rebirth

Postby Sparky » Sun Jun 09, 2019 4:42 pm

So, I needed a distraction. I am sick and tired of working on pins as of late and I needed something else to work on before I set fire to everything.

Pinball is just work now. I no longer enjoy it at all. So, I needed something fun.

Enter DaveW and an old radio. His dad had an old radio he wanted to get rid of. It had been in the family since the 1940's (wow). And I ended up with it. Well, it "did" turn on. but little else. The insides were quite shot. The speaker was crumbling. And the cabinet was peeling everywhere.

With some research, I found that it was a 1929 Viking 80 radio. A nice little piece of musical furniture that cost 3300$ in today's money back in the day. And not only that, but for such a lavish item to be purchased in what is considered the bleakest part of economical history (the great depression) is something else.

But... parts are non-existent... and sadly, so is the value apparently.

So... I decided to modernize it.

The guts were donated to a local antique radio collector. And I decided to go a bit nuts. Some sanding, staining and varnishing later, with a bunch of components and a bit of lunacy thrown in, and here we go.

Stage 5B. All except for NIB crap.

Very nice.

It will be an integral part of my basement gameroom setup. Once complete, every item in there will have a significance to me. This radio has 2. One, it comes from Dave and I appreciate the gift. 2, it is of historical significance to me, as it is from a time when my grandparents were born. So, it reminds me of my late grandfather.

It will proudly sit beside my old color TV I just bought, on which I hooked up my Atari. I will get other vintage consoles at some point. Those remind me of my youth.

Soon, the basement will essentially be a mosaic of... me.
