My RAD CALS review - Indiana Jones

Post by ShootAgain »

Mirco Playfield in Germany is offering a nice alternative to redo cabinet artwork without all the burden involved with the installation of new cabinet decals.

The product is called: RAD CALS
RAD stands for: Ridiculous, Awesome, Decal
D4DC07D4-A154-4A87-B03C-3A428EE65675.jpeg
I would compare this product to the one used for the playfield Hardtops..
The artwork is printed on an adhesive sheet of thin lexan. The RAD CALS are glossy and bring a stunning shine to the cabinet artwork.
The thickness of the product make the installation a breeze and the preparation is very minimal.
The RAD CALS are pre-cut to fit below the siderails and the fit is perfect. No need to spend hours fixing the scratches and gouges. You only have to drill holes for the bolts and the flipper buttons.
The RAD CALS are $369 USD shipped to your door which is a little less than $600 CAD. Still not a cheap option but totally worth it when you consider the time and the effort they make you save..or if like me, you have no talent with wood work.
This a nice solution for commonly faded cabinet like IJ, FT, BSD, etc.. and the rad cals are available for many titles. I would not hesitate to recommend this product.

I'm in the middle of installing a set on BSD.

How did you mark/drill the holes? There are a lot of holes to drill by the way. I am marking from the inside with a brad tipped drill bit then using a Forstner bit to drill the hole from the outside. Makes a nice clean hole but I had to spend quite a bit on a collection of different Forstner bit sizes. And it is quite time consuming. A lot of holes are too close to the edge to drill from the inside.

Also the decals go right to the edge of the cabinet. If you have any rounded corners the decals are going to overhang a bit. So a bit of woodwork is required for this reason.

I also noticed on BSD the front of the cabinet is actually scaled up compared to the original. I think because the original artwork on the front didn't align correctly with the sides. I'm curious to see if the Dracula graphic still aligns with the start button after that. Colours look bang on.

I drilled most of the holes from the inside with a smaller bit (after the rad cals were installed) and then drilled from the outside with a bigger bit.
The fact that the rad cals are installed before drilling really help assuring everything is properly aligned.
I installed one panel at a time following the same procedure.
I also had to put some wood filler on the edge of the head to square the corners and painted in black,
but it was more forgiving than when you install standard decals.
Good luck with your project!
Please post a few pics when you are done.

You should!
Fish tales is one of this game that will look 200% better with its vibrant colours. Totally worth the investment.

You should start a group buy. I’m sure there is a couple of folks that would be interested.

BSD decals are done. Still more work required on the machine!
