Exidy Mouse Crap... uh... Mouse Trap!!!

Post by Sparky »

For score and seven days ago, I performed an Indiana Jones type rescue of artifacts alongside Gtb Rob in Montreal. Our mission? Pull out a few vids out of a basement.

One of those vids was a Mouse Trap, by Exidy.

(cue flashback special effects...)

It's Christmas 1982, and my parents got me a Colecovision for the holidays. HOLY SHIT.... no longer was I confined to beg for a few quarters on weekends at the campground in order to play some videogames, or bug some of my friends so I can play their Atari 2600. When we plugged that into the family TV, my life changed. And with that console, my dad also bought me a few games. So, alongside Donkey Kong, I also had SubRoc, Lady Bug, Smurf, Venture.... and Mouse Trap!

Mouse Trap was a go-to for me for YEARS. But, like most Exidy games... I had never seen one in the wild. Even when I moved to the West Island in 1983 and hit Pinocchio's arcade almost every day, I never really saw one, other than the Crossbow they had.

(cue present day...)

So, for the first time in years, out came the Mouse Trap in daylight.... and into my storage locker. I had VERY briefly looked at it, and tried it..... plugged it in, and... DOA. To be expected. That poor thing was in the basement so long, full of cats pissing everywhere, including on the damn machine. So, first assessment:

- cab looks good
- no control panel damage
- smells real bad
- coin doors corroded

Okelydokely. Not bad... so, today, I decided to take a closer look.

First issue: WONKY LEVELERS....

So while I had it in the pickup, I decided to replace the levelers.
20210404_162952.jpg
...notice the HILARIOUS place where the power switch is?? LOL UNDER the cab, in the front!!

OK, so the 2 front ones were rusted quite bad, and they were just stapled-in t-nuts holding them in place. I pulled them off (levelers were seized anyways) and replaced with nice plates and new levelers. Mission 1 accomplished.
20210404_164609.jpg
OK... time to pull this beast out and assess how dirty it is... OOF... cat piss stains....
20210404_164708.jpg
20210404_164716.jpg
20210404_164722.jpg
20210404_164732.jpg
OK... so, with a bucket of hot water, dish soap, a rag and magic erasers, I got most of the crap off, and the white POPPED!!!
20210404_170453.jpg
20210404_170502.jpg
And I found a detail on it's road use.... the last time it was licensed for commercial use in Quebec was 1984... so, it is safe to say that this baby sat in that tomb in downtown Montreal for 37 years. Wow....
20210404_170509.jpg
But ok.... let's bring her in and start assessing things a bit. I started opening the back panel... very small. Hmm... How do we get to the boards... But... I found a manual and schematics!!!
20210404_171838.jpg
After a couple of minutes of looking at it, I found that the left coin doors, which are welded together, are actually an access panel to the boards... that pull completely out!!! WOW.... SUPER easy to troubleshoot!!!
20210404_172212.jpg
20210404_172303.jpg
OK, so I did a quick test and...

Yeah... but more precisely?

Second issue: WEAK 5V POWER SUPPLY....

OK, that explains the game not booting. I measured 2.1V coming out of the 5V power supply. It is a Condor CP506 power supply. It is very clean but that NTE249 regulator is probably tired, and the caps will need replacing.

So, I am debating replacing the power supply with a switcher, but considering how nice this thing is, I may bite the bullet and replace components on the original. I also happen to have another power supply by Condor (original manufacturer), and may try to rig it to work, but use the casing from the original.

To be continued...

Opinions welcome on the power supply... Repair, replace with switcher, or try and make it esthetically accurate while using a beefy new power supply.

BTW, I did option 3 when I fixed my old Cheyenne. Worked great.

Exidy were odd when it came to the 5V circuit. You have to measure the output directly at the processor on the board. Not at a connector. On that Exidy 440 board I fixed, I had exactly 5.05V at the processor, but I needed the power supply to produce 5.20V to do so. It can throw you off. You think you are OK at 5V at the power supply, but in reality end up with 4.8V at the CPU, causing it to lock.

If it were me, I would recap/fix the original power supply to keep the game as original as possible.

But I am sure there are other opinions out there!

Cheers,

Yup, I found a cap kit for the power supply and PCB regulator, so I ordered them, along with a monitor cap kit.

Should be easy. I suspect it will turn on once I change the caps.

Well, I couldn't sleep last night, so... I worked on it a bit more. I want to sandblast the doors so I have to take them apart.

Also, there are 2 decals on the back of the pcb access panels... so, I painstakingly removed them very slowly in order to save them. Next weekend, sandblast. I am leaving for Quebec City today for work so no time to do it now.

Well, I kind of answered my own question with the GDS principle.... Google Dat Shit.

I found 2 hits. 1st is for an article in the Gazette. I cann't access it unless I pay (of course...) but I got the title of the article:

"October 1, 1986 Amusecor to sell division - Amusecor Inc. of Montreal plans to sell its amusement-arcade division"

Second, is this link: http://www.companylisting.ca/Alouette_C ... fault.aspx

It has the following statement: With the purchase of the Starcade and Amusecor chain of amusement centers in 1983 and 1990, ALOUETTE Group remodelled the stores and reopened them under its existing FUN WORLD chain.

So, I guess Alouette bought whatever was left of Amusecor in the late 80's / 1990.
