Mame Arcade Joystick and Buttons
I've been tinkering with retropie for the past couple weeks. I would like to take it to the next level and order an actual arcade joystick and buttons now. I've watched a few videos and seen the popular ads on Amazon, but there aren't really any thorough reviews out there. The joysticks I've used in real life all tend to make too much noise. All you hear is "click, click, click" the entire time you play a game. Maybe I've been using shitty cheap ones but I don't know. I want to avoid buying anything that makes a shit ton of noise. I want a silent joystick. Buttons... Well they all make noise, but I want it to sound like an arcade button. None of this click, click, click shit.
Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Some of the best controllers and parts make those noises. A lot of people prefer the tactile sound. Especially people playing fighting games, Some of the best parts are Sanwa, Hori, and Happ but from my experience they all make clicking sounds for the most part. I prefer the sounds to be honest but I see where you are coming from too.

Re: Mame Arcade Joystick and Buttons
I will check them out. Thanks.
Happ seems to be the worst. I have to take a look at the dates on some of the video's I've been watching, but many of them state that the quality of Happ has fallen off dramatically. The buttons "click" a shit ton more than a Sanwa so I think I'm cutting Happ off my list of potentials.Murphelman wrote:Some of the best controllers and parts make those noises. I don't play a ton of fighting games. Maybe I will once I have everything setup properly, but in the arcade I only really ever dabbled in SFIICE. MK I played more at home on Genesis, but it wasn't my go to genre and still isn't. Maybe this is why I don't appreciate the sound.
Maybe I could insulate the base of the joystick with some sort of sound deadening material? I'm thinking the "click, click" would still penetrate through the wood base to my ears though.

Re: Mame Arcade Joystick and Buttons
The best arcade joysticks you can find are the leafs Wico joystick, harder to find but real arcade feeling.
They are silent, much more precise and faster than ''click click click'' micro-switch joysticks. You will really enjoy your arcade games with wico leafs joystick. I built my mame with those joysticks and tried tons of others brand ''click' joysticks on many different mame machine, there's no close comparaison. I play arcade games since 1980 and in my experience those are the joysticks you want

The only utilization where microswitch '' maybe'' better are fighting games.

Thank you. This pretty much nails it for me. You've already been down this same road so I will simply walk in your footsteps and do the same.HPR Pinball wrote:The best arcade joysticks you can find are the leafs Wico joystick, harder to find but real arcade feeling.

I am guessing WICO will be difficult to find?
What were your conclusions on buttons?

For buttons, samething i use only leafs switch.
You can certainly find wico joysticks on the used market but they are pricey.

By pricey what do you mean? Should I expect to pay under or over $100?HPR Pinball wrote:For buttons, samething i use only leafs switch.

Has anyone tried these?

It's advertised as "silent operation" when installed. $50USD is steep, but I really REALLY don't want to hear the joystick or buttons except for the sound of my fingers mashing them.

Silly question, what happened to Wico, are they still making joysticks?

Re: Mame Arcade Joystick and Buttons
Yeah used wico leaf joystick price is around 60-80us, maybe much more than cheap chinese microswitch but worth the price in my opinion.Fifty wrote:By pricey what do you mean? Should I expect to pay under or over $100?HPR Pinball wrote:For buttons, samething i use only leafs switch.
