(tu me vera pas Ketchup, I will be in and out in a flash) Nous avons deux personnes du North Star sur place qui sont deja devenu sourd aujourdui.

"That's it ? That's all ?, - was that really it ?!!"

I build walls of death".

I am having a particular difficult time writing about everything I have been doing for the last 18 months.

My activities have not slowed down. I have great stories to tell. The adventures never cease.

When you are looking, truly magical things happen regularly in life.

I just don't have the time to tell them and share them currently.

So looking forward to hearing some of your stories tonight at the North Star.

And yes, so true about not having time to write about the magic. For some reason it is difficult to put into words properly and by the time you realized that a moment or event ties in magically into your state of being, it's gone. Very elusive bastard that magic thing, especially when we are do'ers. A sense of wonderment is crucial in allowing us to stop doing occasionally in order to tell the tales.

"My my my, we are treating eachother just like strangers. I can't ignore the fact.... " roughly quoted from the Brian Eno song, "the Papa Negro Blowtorch and Me "

What a couple of days. I am seriously in awe of the past little while. I must never forget that everything remains in flux. It is not about "good" or "bad" it is about change and going further. Seems to be a prerequisite to leave some things behind while not forgetting those that hopefully got you to do new shit via a better mindset. Be thankful to the past for that, no matter how painful or pleasant the way you remember it happens to be. Hopefully, the latter grasp on the fucker will be understood as the only way to make bad stuff worthwhile while allowing the "candy-like" experiences of the same past become sweeter as we age into dotage. If the present is good, it is partially due to a past that was well interpreted. Learn to manipulate the bastard to your advantage in this very real here and now instead of ignoring its often painful character, the past I mean.

Here are words of solace from my older brother - "Just keep in mind that your life can turn around on a dime at anytime. It can be nerve racking, but it can also be liberating, and while freedom is what we strive for, freedom to be ourselves is primordial. Don't let your past put flies on your ass, grow away from it in a mindful way while you have the strength."

I could go on, but I won't. Suffice to say that I saw some friends last night at the North Star (old and new) and it made me feel that I have arrived at something through the years of bullshit and struggle and pain. I am where I want to be and there are no flies on my ass.

R.A.B. wrote:So now that it is cooler outside and inside, I can tell the story of the 1958 Bally Allstar Deluxe Bowler without sounding like a whack job.

So I had the cabinet, only the cabinet for this game back in 1992-3 or so, and I needed the backbox. I thought this thing (this bowler) was shithouse, just baller.

Every summer a fellow collector and woodrail nut job named Steve from Toronto would rent a 16 foot truck and drive to the Maritimes to fill it up. He always would make a stop in Montreal and come to see me, hang out and shoot the shit. This is before the internet invaded our lives and things were more real and less misunderstood when you could look someone in the eyes when they spoke. Otherwise we would communicate by phone and snail mail when we had lists of stuff we were looking for from eachother, but when we talked in person it was the best. So one summer in the early 90's I asked him to look for a backbox for that bowler on his yearly trip to the east coast. And when he drove through Montreal on his way back to Hog Town with his truck loaded to the top with woodrails and crates & crates of old parts, sure enough he had a backbox for a Bally 1958 Deluxe Allstar bowler for me. I gave him the 50 bucks he asked for and also bought a some old parts I needed from this yearly summer stash/harvest. Those were the days when things were easy peasy. I really yearn for those times, but what ya gonna do when you now live in a zoo.

So jump forward to to 2018. I am at the MPL at P1AG and talking to Pat01. Told him that I was looking for some cool oddball & older machines that I can operate at the North Star for the young hipsters who feel intimidated by pinball machines as too complicated to play and understand. Well, Pat had been sitting on a Bally bowler for the past four years that he got from a liquidation estate deal. I asked him for more details about it and he said that it looked great and that the cabinet repaint was perfectly executed. Even though he couldn't come up with pics or the name of the machine he owned, I had a sneaking suspicion that we were talking about a Bally bowler with the balls enclosed under a glass. These are not common, most ball bowlers do not have the balls under a playfield glass. So I start reeling in the years and remembered that the one I had decades ago was sold to a collector in St. Eustache named Rollie years prior. Rollie had gotten into collecting coin-op stuff because he fixed air conditioners for a living and had Wildtron Amusements as a client. Hence, this caused him to fill his family home with all sorts of amusement and gambling equipment. I sold him the complete unrepaired/unrestored Bally Allstar Deluxe Bowler (replay version) for 300 bones, and a couple of years later when I visited him before moving to Toronto for Laniel Automatic, I was totally blown away with the job he had done in bringing this beauty back to snuff. It was perfect and I was very much impressed with his restoration skills. Later, as fate would have it, his wife divorced him and got all his stuff, cleaning out all his passions, including the bowler.

So now, 20 + years later I think this may be the one Pat has and which I am looking to operate at the North Star if it will stand up to this next generation of players so far removed from those who played it when it came out, likely their parents or even grandparents. So I thought to myself, if the serial numbers for the cabinet and the backbox don't match, this could likely be the one I had in the 90's.

So I went up to see Pat on Sunday to check the game out since it had stopped working when he had brought it home 4 years ago and I wanted to know if all the parts for the complex turret launcher where there. It is a real piece of engineering from Bally, very unique and I knew it. When I finally got it to fire the 3 inch balls out of the catapult, I decided to close the deal. It will make a fine addition to the North Star line up this fall.

By the by, Rollie had done such a good job on the cabinet repaint and texturing that the serial numbers normally stamped on the front side of the cab and backbox were non visible when I tried to find them at Pat's place. They had been filled in and painted over so well, that there was no trace of either one of them.

This mystery remains unsolved and this game continues to amaze me.

OK, so after we bought & brought this machine into the shop for a check up, we were quite excited. This is a majestic piece of coin operated amusement equipment. As I said above, Bally serial numbers were usually stamped on the front side of the cab and the backbox, But on this beauty they were simply filled in and repainted and textured so well that there was no way of knowing if it was the same one I owned in the early 90's and sold as a project to a collector buddy called Rollie back in the 90's.

JamesSchid and I unloaded this beast from the North Star van and began setting it up in his workshop. and that was when I almost fell on my ass while James laughed like I have never seen him smirk before 'cause I had told him the story of the one I owned. We put on the front wood legs and tipped it down to brace a stool under the back ass end of the cab in order to bolt in the back legs. Once braced on the stool we saw this, (the pic below) and both broke out laughing at fate. The North Star will operate what I owned 25 years ago and that which came back to me in order to show us what fun it is to make connections instead of thinking that the world started with our experience of meeting these older amusement machines for the first time. There were many extraordinary lives, pre-www collectors "hands on" realities and wonderful true stories before we got into collecting with the seemingly easy/lazy help of the the web and the discussion forums of self-importance which permit every voice to be that of an expert - I am no exception to that fact. I really appreciate ipdb.org, but according to that site, this thing doesn't exists, at least that is what I was told by a very internet knowledgeable navigating pinball collector and player. It doesn't exist because it is not on ipdb, yet.....here it is. Go figure.

Spending the last few days with you and trying to keep up with your being & energy has been exhausting for me and yet so damn inspiring. Even though we are likely at the end of our civilization in america, I feel pretty happy.

Please keep writing Scott, even if you do not post. Someone may find it when we are gone and venture to change things in being inspired by you words. There are those who think like us, and as for the many others, they have likely resigned to their fates, or simply think we are fools. It doesn't matter either way, what does is expressing yourself somehow, having a voice and being heard.

As you know, I am taking my son on the road tomorrow for some time away from the city, and away from the daily grind and routine which is accepted and unchallenged for the most part. Find your path.

I have found my path.
Much work ahead I suspect.

I delete most of what I write online.
Been there before, and I am there again.

The modern world has little time to take the effort to read and think on thoughts.
Assess and move on; so how to react to this juxtaposition as a writer, is a conundrum.

Not just for myself.
For everyone.

Writers.
Readers.

We need each other.

More soon.

And, Robert has been waiting for this.
I'm far more burnt out, burning brightly.
Than I could possibly care to ever admit to.
It's time to focus my energy; very specifically.

"The Modern World" - that means the present. I may not want to deal in the modern world if I can't help it to harbour a more attentive approach to life. I think I am ready for a new approach as well Scott, the modern world will plow forward as it needs to, whether we understand it, agree or disagree with the direction it ends up taking - perhaps it is no longer our ticket to ride. Don't know, maybe it's the heat and all the running around we do in a frenzied attempt to accomplish something or other in hopes that it is going to save us from whatever we have disdain towards. I don't know exactly what it is you and I are after, but I am pretty damn sure that it has something to do leaving some mark or a signature of sorts on a part of the modern world, a world that is no longer the same one we grew up in. It happens to all of us who grow older and end up trying to preserve something from our youth that made us feel that we had a purpose beyond the ordinary.

Shit, I am just reporting what I think I understand. So today I am going to go walk above the trees at a place called Skywood in order to get in touch with my monkey roots and then to rib fest in order to get in touch with my cave man roots. What will people 10,000 years from now say about their roots in the digital age ? Will there still be trees and animal ribs to stradle and devourer ? Crazy questions this morning.

Have a banner 21st century day my friends.

Who is in control ? The few who have figured out how to limit indiviidual choice while providing the illusion of freedom to linger, or the masses that have had their social consciousness fragmented by the former and are unable to say no in one clear and untied voice.

It's all about what you are led to believe and the socks ofcourse.

The outgoing Quebec "liberals" also babbled about "l'austerite" a few years back telling the general population that they had to tighten their belts in order to save social programs and help the less fortunate.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch....... you figure it out.

Today in the news I got back to work after a few days away from the city, and yes, it felt good. Worked a half a day today in order to take care of some other stuff in the afternoon. Totally OK with my employer/co-workers, no hassles or bullshit or comments. I left Alouette at 1PM after Cybercid and gf270 came by for their parts and tech talk. In passing, I really appreciate all the support I am getting from you folks, I want to stress that. This relationship we are building is good for the community and what is left of this grass roots industry that doesn't take well to being tamed into a corporate entity. Parts are available in Montreal, lots of freakin' parts, weird and common along with good technical back up in getting you folks the right stuff. We are all learning through this.
20180518_140955.jpg
Even after four days on the road with my son, I was not the least bit unhappy about going back to work today. Not like I use to. I don't see "time off" as that different from my normal routine of selling pinball parts and fixing em games at Alouette, or keeping the machines at the North Star shinning, and making people's old clunkers come back to life via Montreal Pinball. All these activities generate amazing stories and memories which I appreciate in the here and now, but also will likely cherish later if I can get them all written down in due time.
20180811_202412.jpg
It may take me some time in order to make a separation between working and not working. Gonna be an adjustment for sure, but then again, why make that separation at all. I use to have to in order to stay sane, and my close friends and some of the smarter members here know that this didn't work out too well. I was a miserable mess. It is all about letting life flow and continue in and through our daily activities in a chosen scenario of doing what you are about. Here's to life away from the screwheads and the god-damn shithead A type personalities who take all the fun out of work. Live, work, play, love and laugh, I know that sounds like a Hallmark card, but this is me drunk on very good red wine tonight so you may have to excuse my babble. There is so much to be done and I welcome that, just have to protect myself from those who have become a cure for happiness, and the bastards are multiplying rapidly as our empire declines into times that are not very conducive to sharing the beauty and extraordinary natural, and even the fabricated wealth of our world, i.e. - currencies. Prosperity gaps are growing, and the race to the end is on.

Montreal - August 18th, 2018 - so 08/18/18 ou 18/08/18 si mostapha/senior 18/08/18 - stardate 69269236 = fuck it.

Finally, after two years of yearning for another Hooker in my studio above the trees, I now finally have two side by side. I couldn't be more pleased tonight in their awesome presence. Yeah, I know, I can be very superficial, but only as a specialty, my very close friends can attest to that fact in bountiful honesty.

We (the maniacs) had planned, but never succeeded to bring my Bally "Bonanza" bingo machine to my hideout on the island of the "nones" via numerous attempts spanning the last two years. But this week, push came to shove, and I am happy to say that I am hooked again. One needs to have goals, agreed ?

The original test location for the North Star which was in a funky basement in Mile End about 5 years ago is finally being turned into a real honest to goodness laundry room beginning on Monday, so we had to make the move out of there with the remaining pieces of our livelihood as the next generation of Montreal street operators. Even though pinball and a backdrop of a laundry room are worlds apart, I think there is something like that in NYC, but it may be the other way around.

I also understood that after leaving Pitt street in May of 2015 I remember swearing up and down that I would not have anything pinball related pollute my new sanctuary above the trees and the bushes where I would reside in order to recycle myself into a Japanese pastry chef with a tendency to write volumes of weird stories about how I perceived the world from that juxtaposition. I have finally realized that I am as sick as most of you folks who are looking to make sense of your existence by having an interest outside of your daily responsibilities. Being human remains a useless passion.

See the 9th post down on the link below for reference to the above claim/statement, already more than three years ago. "Ah those were the days I want to hold ya man." - John Lennon to Mick Jagger (1968)

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14748&start=650

So I am a liar if you read what is in the post above, but you know what, it goes to show that you never really can tell. It's crazy. The truth only holds true when you are about to die and finally shut up for good. Staying alive will always end up making you a liar, and that is natural fact unless you are a robot or trust your computer when it is on-line.

HOWEVER, I don't see these two Hookers side by side as being anything close to a typical "pinball pollution" of my home, or the least bit unpleasant and/or ordinary/predictable in our times. There is something different about these two machines than what is desirable to the present demographic of what is collectible and overpriced these days, - the present demographic with disposable income will claim to know what is best and desirable and then they will also die and it won't be true anymore.

On the left a Hooker from 1936 and now to its' right, another Hooker from 1976. 40 years apart, and still spectacular looking. What an amazing evolution in electro-mechanical technology, yet the principle objective of these two Donald Hooker masterpieces generated from that mother foya Bally factory remains the lure of thinking that you can score more. Crazy shit I

Today in Montreal – August 20th, 2018

The daily news is pleased to report that there is some relief on the way vis a vis the weather starting Thursday. Sunny and 24 degrees sounds like good thinking & doing weather. So needless to say that we are in for some action/reaction contrary to being stunned into a heavy stupor by the constant humidity of the past month or so. This also means that summer is beginning to end, so be it.

The theory is this, people have been behaving erratically and in a very confused manner through the streets of Montreal lately. The construction and surprise detours have also contributed to erratic speeding and horn honking adding to our collective bad behaviour. Too hot for the majority of us who haven't yet developed thyroid problems to keep them cool, but that is only a matter of time, and this as well will become a handy excuse for more new & bad behaviour. The latest medical research identifying health problems like sleep disorders and other modern day hassles like Monsanto gmo wheat causing people to bloat up like potatoes are also becoming a deep concern. Now “they” are saying that you should just eat grilled meat and veges and you will be OK, and don't suck on fruits with that latter combination cause the pituitary gland won't know what do do about the sugar from their sweet juices. Bite the fruit and chew it up like a cow, crunch your veges and get you teeth fixed so you can make vegetable soup in your mouth hence easing the work your intestines will have to perform in order to absorb the cancer fighting nutrients through its walls as long as they are not caked with harden fecal matter that sticks there because of all the dairy we were told to consume as children and which is now also being rammed down our throws as adults. There is no way we should be drinking cow's milk as adults, it just helps to promote what Brian Clemens called a leaky gut, smoothing our the inner walls of the human intestines. Your crap should not look like a smooth skinned snake in the bowl, it should have ridges and be a mirror your intestinal channel before being assaulted by the dairy board and the weston brothers.

Hmmm. You force me to read, write AND then respond.

You are a constant pain in the ass my friend. Thank you, as ALWAYS.

This all sounds like too much effort to me.
Too much work required to conform or behave.

Went to work this morning at a decent time. Lifted, worked, sweat PROFUSELY... That's key. I sent myself...
And generally, I did all kinds of things away from the desk and keyboard that I had chained myself to...
I did this to myself. I was/am the man, still. It is what society wants, expects of me. Conformity...
I don't care for it that much tbh. I will re-invent my own path once again, soon. I'm allowed to.

Open pastures my friends.
Water, trees and land.

More soon.

Keep thinking.
