Battery Replacement

Postby Chris Silver » Wed Dec 24, 2014 8:16 am

Complacency is a killer!

Here is my friendly yearly reminder again to change the batteries in your pins. Don't forget the ones in storage and any devices you might have that haven't been maintained for a while.

Pins: Lightning, Af-Tor, Embryon, Black Hole, Elektra, Stellar Wars, 8 Ball Deluxe LE, Timeline, Silverball Mania
Vids: Double Dragon 619-1
Gone: Space Station, Top Score, Flash Gordon, Solar Fire, Haunted House, Fire (x2), Vector, Bally Playboy, Tropic Isle, Beat the Clock, Blue-Chip
WTB: Punk!, Black Knight, Spirit, Fathom, Split Second, Nine Ball, Medusa
Its better to have played and lost than never to have played at all.

Do NOT use Duracell, they leak after a while. NEVER use cheap no name batteries!

Energizers seem to be leak free and they last a long time.

Energizer has "No Leak Guarantee" written on some of their battery packs now. Both Duracell and Energizer have had No Leak Guarantees for quite a few years (just never advertised publicly). Details here;

http://www.duracell.com/en-us/guarantee
http://www.energizer.com/pages/Guarantee-legal.aspx

I'm not sure how easy it would be to get a replacement through them or if this even applies to Canada. Something to keep in the back of your head though if your batteries do leak all over your MB.

I don't think I have ever seen an Energizer battery leak and they are publicly advertised as guaranteed to be leak free.

I am not trying to sell these things, it is something I have noticed over the years.

Energizer: "No leaks guaranteed or we will replace your device*."

*up to $250

I guess that may start to cover the cost of a replacement MPU if the batteries ever did leak.

And if you want to keep your high score in memory, change the batteries while game is turned on.

Going to be my "12 days of Christmas" (or Festivus for the rest-of-us) routine going forward. Replaced all mine today and not too soon for Firepower, one of them girls was starting to go! Glad I caught it but now I'm pulling the boards and installing a remote battery pack and bullet proofing everything while i'm in there. :rambo

every duracell copper or the kirkland from costco leaked in pins/remotes/slot machine. This year I changed them all for energizer. Will see in a year how well they hold.

I just install Energizer Lithiums. Leak free and lasts a long time. I have one pin going on year 5 with them in it, still work fine.

Worst batteries? The "Defiant" brand from Home Depot. I had 2 batteries internally short out and have a meltdown. Not good.

I only use Energizer batteries or even better NVRAM. Funny, the wife had some battery candle that wasn't working the other day and when I opened it, the Duracell batteries were leaking!

Funny thing is since this post came back up, I have found leaky battery's in 2 seperate devices.

Both sets of battery's were not expired and both were Duracell.

Same here. I typically switch out all my batteries in Jan. or Feb. I was having problems with Judge Dredd and noticed that the batteries were starting to leak(thankfully no damage). They aren't even a year old, maybe 10 months!!!!!! All my other batteries were fine but none of them were Duracells. Mostly Energizers and Panasonic. I am now putting in remote battery holders this Jan. and or Feb.

10 Pins - HS (under restoration),Firepower, STARGATE, ST 25th, EFTLW, Whirlwind, White Water, Judge Dredd, Joker Poker, BSD
1 Slot - 3 Reel
4 Vids - Rush the Rock x 2 linked, Mame(under repair), Megatouch XL
4 nut machines (seems appropriate)

I thought that some of them don't hold the time and date.

Also, two pieces of round dowel, with 2 washers with leads soldered on, attached to a $1 3 AA battery holder is WAY simpler than unsoldering a chip and installing a socket and spending over $20 a machine.

Much less time, effort and money. If I sell I just pull the dowels out and put in 3 batteries for the next owner.

I can buy a lot of 'el cheapo' batteries once I have the batteries mounted remotely. Here's a link to decent batteries that have never given me a problem.

https://www.lowes.ca/batteries/energize ... lsrc=aw.ds

24 batteries for let's say $20 gives me about 8 years per machine. That's not too bad.
