Another one for the books and/or the road

Post by R.A.B. »

ANOTHER YEAR IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR

There were many small pieces of paper all over my kitchen counter earlier this morning. There is nothing abnormal about this, especially on January 1st. Each paper has a date and a prompt scribbled on it related to a fait salliant/significant event which occurred in 2016.
Faits saillants de 2016
Faits saillants de 2016
So on this first morning of 2017, I quietly gathered up these little pieces of paper and put them in chronological order in a neat little pile.
Neat little/big pile of amusement
Neat little/big pile of amusement
I then began to transcribe them with more detail onto a line or two of a loose-leaf paper that will then go into a binder with about 30 other similar sheets, each one representing the pivotal events from a year lived. Each line entry has a date in the left column and a few carefully chosen words which weave to conjure up and represent the memorable occurrences from an expired year. I pick the words in lieu of creating a trigger that will allow my future memory to colour in the rest of the story. I have been doing this for over 25 years, and noticed that some of these sheets of loose-leaf paper have begun to turn yellow, which again is nothing abnormal. What is abnormal however, is that the events of 2016 which I considered important did not fit on one sheet of paper this time around. It will surely take two this year. Nevertheless, I continue to assemble this three ring binder in order for it to serve as a sort of memory triggering tool which I will use when I am too old to do anything of any great significance in comparison to the life events detailed in this binder which await to be revisited by an older me.
Shrine/shelf of symbols
Shrine/shelf of symbols
By that time, the only event of significance that I will likely be able to muster will be an attempt to chase a woman my age down the residence hall and die of a heart attack on the plush carpet or in her arms, whichever comes first. This will also be fine, and in order with what I consider to be a significant event of sorts. (Someone else will have to write this one down and make sure that it makes people laugh.)

So after “eyeballing” these eventful scribbles on small paper this morning, it prompted me to write this post on MAACA. Mainly because so much of what was written had to do with the amusement industry which I shamefully admit to having participated in for the larger majority of my life. Result being : I consequently have become the biggest coin-operated amusement industry whore in and around the greater Montreal area and likely beyond. I also suspect that my reputation lies variant within the larger than life equation of the www that I do not totally understand or completely acknowledge as of yet. Needless to say that I can't be held totally responsible as to how people see me due to the "augmented reality" (pindude152's words) which the web promotes, I can only speculate and say it anyway. I am tired of being subjected to so much useless information.
Coin windows on Montreal crate

From being a young player to a hobbiest to a collector many moons ago and then to becoming an operator of sorts to route & home service technician to parts & service manager to operator and back, I remain surprisingly in one piece. Hell, in fact I am still all of the above at once (which is exceptional in itself) minus the first three designations which make up the the bulk of the members on this forum. This latter distinction is another reason why I no longer consider myself part of MAACA, or even part of too many other groups for that matter. Add to this the fact that I find pinball machines generally heavy, troublesome to repair and noisy while I no longer harbour much excitement when it comes to the all too common pinball machines most people find desirable.
Where are we going then ?
Where are we going then ?
I am not a snob, I just feel like a tired porn star when I see another pinball, I just see it as more work I don't need. My involvement and peers are now evidently elsewhere if anywhere at all. I don't expect many of you to understand this unless you have worked in this industry all your life or that you are a close friend of mine. There are many more important things related to pinball that will get my attention these days. Then again, everything is connected to everything so I am not really saying much here am I.
Pressure
Pressure
So I guess that it should not be a surprise that 2016 did not fit on one sheet of loose-leaf paper this afternoon. It was the biggest most eventful year thus far in my binder along with 1979, 1988 and 1998 being close behind in importance. Much of the events that have marked 2016 essentially had to do with family, friends, art and life goals. It then occurred to me that these are the elements that allow one to “faire une bonne vie” (build a good life). So I think that I have finally come full circle. With the opening of the North Star -Machine a Piastres and Cineplex-Starburst becoming part of the Player One Amusement Group, I think I am not done yet. Best of both worlds right ? We'll see. Craziness off the stern in both cases.

Love, art, humour and hard work in all their forms are key to being productive and consequential rather than making lots of noise in an empty room. I want to remain vital and work where the rubber meets the road, and not where the rubber meets the sky as it spins empty jibberish on LCD screens while producing hype disguised as productive and clever.
Craziness on wheels
Craziness on wheels
I will refuse to partake in the values put “out there” in order to lure the general populace down the rabbit hole of emptiness and miserable ease. Believing lies to be values will make the masses easy to find by the fiends who continue to act solely from their reptilian brains. Not what I want to partake in for the remainder of my life. The game has indeed changed again, while the song remains the same.

“But you and I we've been through that, and this is not our fate. So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.”

A bold opening to a splendid journey. Some said it would never happen, I never stopped believing that we could make this happen in Montreal despite the restricive by-laws.

Those who do not believe in themselves always lie, and liars seem to be more rampant that ever.

I am done trying to explain what is clear. I have done my bit for King & Country.

Good night Nellie.

She can be anyone you want Vic. That is the nice thing about Nellie.

I think I saw her last night at the North Star. This time she was a pretty pinball playing plateau girl who turned into god and devil all wrapped up into one after a few beetle juices as she struggled with Old Chicago. Seeing this, I fixed a Stern and left quickly.

Damn, I am due for some time off.

I was regretting getting my oil changed this evening and then recalled this thread I glanced at this morning.

Wonderful story Robert. I wish I could put together a book of memories but I fear it's too late. All the craziness is gone from my simple existence aside from a wonderful wife and 4 nut cases running at my feet. Most of us can relate to hating our jobs as a lot see it as exciting or cool. I hate airplanes.

Thanks for the good read and great to see some extra class on Maaca. :-)

I'll tell Nellie you said hi.

I'll comment this thread later this week, I was too lazy to read it all at once. :FP:

Nellie is just an English slang reference. It all boils down to casual banter. ;)

Bro you are such a good writer!

From the Urban dictionary

Nellie

Sweet, beautiful girl, very intelligent and creative. Though very stubburn and often pessimistic. More of a leader then follower. Often not one of the most popular girls around, but does have a group of friends. You would be very lucky to have a Nellie in your life. Wether a friend or lover. Nellie's often switch back and forth from the dark and light side. They will get evil if pushed to it, but will be an angel if treated right. Love to pull pranks! And often act before thinking.

If that's the diffinition of a Nellie, it's the exact deffinition of my exwife and beleive me You would "NOT" be very lucky to have a Nellie in your life.
What is so terrible about "Nellie" is the last part "And often act before thinking" you have no idea of up to where and to what extent this can bring you in complications and trouble if you are married to a "Nellie" . :x :FP: :FP: :FP: :FP:
