Negative Thread - Hated Themes

Post by Chris Silver »

The New Year is all about thinking positive. Fair enough. Anyway...........

The theme I can't stand the most is western. I specifically despise horses. There are a lot of great games out there with a western theme, but I would open my back door and toss it in the yard before I kept one in my collection.

What is your least favourite themed pin?
Pins: Spirit, Centaur II, Af-Tor, Embryon, Black Hole, Elektra, Timeline, Silverball Mania, Panthera, Baby Pac Man, Blackout, Alien Poker
Gone: Space Station, Top Score, Flash Gordon, Solar Fire, Haunted House, Fire (x2), Vector, Bally Playboy, Tropic Isle, Beat the Clock, Blue-Chip, Disco, Punk!, Lightning, Time Fantasy, 8 Ball Deluxe LE, Double Dragon, Stellar Wars
WTB: Black Knight, Fathom, Split Second, Nine Ball
Its better to have played and lost than never to have played at all.

Do you mean the licensing theme, the medieval concept or fantasy in general?

The whole concept of licensing is questionable in itself now that you brought that up.

It hasn't happened yet and I don't think it ever will but I would hate a RAP music themed pin. I'm also not too fond of sport themed pins like basketball, football, soccer, etc..... except WCS I do like.

 ... +1.

Lol

But actually, a turn-off theme for me is anything irrelevant or lazy like using a theme that honestly no one gives 2 shits about. Roller Coaster Tycoon comes to mind, or Dialed In.

"Hey guys, I have a great idea... Let's just use a boring-ass PC game license or cellphones as a theme!!"

"Genius, man... Fucking genius!"

Bingo. Who the fuck will care about a TV show-based pin theme?

How many CSI pins were built?

24?

The answer is who gives a shit. They all get dated fast. Sopranos, and once the show stops, Walking Dead and GOT. Movie based pins are the same unless referencing a classic theme, or if the movie was legendary. Then they have a bit more staying power.

Music themes last longer because we still listen to classic music years later.

But I prefer original themes. It creates interest. Centaur, Fathom, Gorgar, Haunted House, Sorcerer, Alien Poker... And I do have a softspot for themes referencing historical events.

Theme and artwork are so vital to pins longevity/popularity.imo.

I dont want Mel Gibsons face in my house! Or Judge dredd! just fugly ! :FP:

Gottlieb seemed pretty good back in the day for art/theme. (G.Morrison.)

WMS took it to another level from 78/88 IMO. RIP WMS. Art/ Theme/ Layout. Awesomesauce.(largely fueled by demand,,and 80's cocaine.) Bally too.

It would seem (historically) That a nonlicenced title with decent art/layout survives test of time better than a licenced pin In terms of popularity, value, etc.??

Stern has a tough job everyday, Sell enough to keep viable.Decent Licence(theme) allows almost a predictable amount to be sold I would imagine. Donny's art has helped (Ottawa boy!!) Although I think it's beginning to be over utilized.

Exciting time to be in this hobby, LCD screens. JJP, Stern,Other manufacturers coming out with cool pins. MM remake, Batman 66! Virtual pinball. :!:

That would be cool but would you spent $8000 for a NIB Centaur? I wouldn't.

$8000? Man that's on the low end these days! I don't know how any operators can afford NIB pins these days. Which means we won't find the new titles in the wild, which really sucks!

My beef:
Who the hell played Comet and decided that this... THIS, of all games, should have a trilogy?
sheesh

Same with Playboy. One game, I could forgive. 3 terrible games? ugggggh

Clowns and Hugh Hefner are two themes that should never have been repeated.

I know... I was just throwing a number at it.

Unfortunately I don't see a NIB pin ever again at the price.

I guess I will have to focus on the slightly older stuff for now.

I agree with revisiting classics. I dream of a day where they release an updated version like Centaur with an LCD screen, and you gave a chouce of playing the original ruleset or a whole new much deeper ruleset. Kinda like Bride of Pinbot 2.0. I think it would be successful. And considering that the originals like Centaur cost 3600-4000$ in todays money at the time, a 5000$ price tag would make them sell like hotcakes.

I know... Wishful thinking. But the potential is there... I would love to play an updated version of Black Knight...

Not a fan of music-based themes. Example : ACDC is a really fun game, but I'm not drawn to it. I've been a Metallica fan since 1986, but just don't put my loonies into it when I have a choice.

Sorry... I don't like the Disco Duck Black Knight. In fact, I find the ruleset kind of simple for a System 11.
