Smart Ball, pajatso, payazzo, and mechanical ball games...

Postby cait001 » Sun Jan 07, 2018 10:28 pm

(I want to preface this by saying I am actively looking for Smart Ball, Pajatso, Payazzo machines. Please let me know if you stumble on one of these...)

Semicolin recently introduced me to the existence of Smart Ball, an older Japanese arcade game that is kind of like Pachinko in slow motion.

I just love games like this and would definitely want to buy one or two if ever possible.

I have also been super in to pajatso / payazzo since trying them at Fun Spot a few years back.

What I love about these machines, and 70s pachinko, is how much is done purely mechanically. I love the non-electric bagatelles. and for me these are even better.

While the game does have a single motor, the 1937 Rockola World Series is a mechanical marvel in how it tracks strikes, outs, scores, etc.
highly recommended watching:

I'll never own one of those but a gal can dream.
I still would like a fancy bagatelle at some point.

Anyways, I've mentioned this before I think, but the reason this isn't just a WTB post is because I wanted to re-share the magic of Jollyball.
Jollyball now resides at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, but it was commissioned for Expo 86 in Vancouver, where I discovered it as a young kid.

watch a full run:

I pretty much credit Jollyball entirely for instilling my loves of mechanical marble machines.
It was made by Charles Morgan who has turned the medium into an artform. http://morgan-art.ch/atelier_1

Just wanted to share this all, and put out any feelers for a Japanese Smart Ball, or Finnish Payazzo, for some day...

and hey if you're ever bored, DIY Marble Run youtube is a rabbit hole worth wasting a few evenings on

I just spent $3K on airline tickets *just* to play smart ball. That's how hardcore I am. That said, I'll ask the owner of the parlour if she has any to sell, and I'll get a quote from Japan Post.

Pretty sure the right way to ask is:

Ha, fascinating machines!

Re payazzo / pajatso... I had spotted one of these in a crazy Finnish film called "Jackpot 2", which I wrote about in my blog post here: http://pinballspotting.blogspot.com/201 ... -1982.html

At the time, my quick research had only led me to the name "drop case machine" [ see http://www.melright.com/slots/dropcase.htm ]. Now I can update my post with the proper name!

BTW, excerpts of the crazy film, including the guy playing the payazzo can be seen in the pinball supercut at the North Star, which I've been adding stuff to the last couple of months.

Cool! Yeah I don't think they spread too far outside of Finland, and they are def some of my favourite "drop case machines". I guess another example in that category would be the skill roll machines. Much more common in Japan, but Bally had some too http://www.pinrepair.com/arcade/bskillr.htm

Oooo they have Arrange Ball as well! pindude152 was telling me about similar Arrange Ball machines.
If there are so many broken ones, maybe they'll sell? ;)

Cool parlor! Nice to see a row of arrange a ball games in their natural environment.
Crazy to think all these games. Pinball, bingo, pachinko, smart ball are all descendant of bagatelle.
