Pinball bad smell

Post by Vectakk »

Weird topic, isn't it ?
But true.

I bought my BK2000 two weeks ago,.
So for a 29 years old granny pinball,
when I open it,
it smells a lot like '' le renfermé, le vieu bois humide '' ( I do not know how to say it in english ! ).

So, anyone knows how and/or what to do to avoid it, or get it out,
and make my pin smells fresh like clothes out of the dryer with Bounce ! :D

PS: I already use my vacuum to clean all the inside cabinet.

No joke: put a bunch of dryer sheets in it.

Second vote for dryer sheets. I had a real stinky machine once and it worked.

You can also try an open box of baking soda. I've used that for less stinky games, but if it's really nasty use the dryer sheets.

Yep tape a dryer sheet to a small ceramic heater on a bench in front of the coin door opened.
Leave a couple hours with surveillance.
Eighter that or start smoking , you wont smell the vieux renfermé anymore, lol

Bounce sheet. No name is fine. Make sure it is the scented kind. Unfold the sheet and lay it in the belly of the pin.

Go to dollarama and get the arm and hammer pet deodorizer baking soda box.

Its $2.50.

Open it and leave it in your machine. It works.

LOL!
Never thought of putting dryer sheets in a pinball machine.

I've decided to test out this new "scent replacement" method in a especially smelly bingo machine.

Cheers!

I've sold machines because they smelt so bad in my games room. The first and cleanest machine I ever bought was like that. Tried dryer sheets, baking soda, and a few other things. Eventually the smell would come back, and I determined painting all the unfinished wood inside would be the only solution and sold it. Too bad was in perfect condition otherwise (Allied Liesure - Rock on). I didn't realize how nice it was until I went through another 10 machines.
Now playing....Dr Who, Pinbot, Black Hole, Mars GOW, Supersonic, Moon Flight, Firepower
Now fixing...Circus, Force II

In my experience, masking a bad smell is not getting rid of the smell.

What is the source of the smell? Smoke residue? I had some success removing it by wiping things down with a degreaser (Mean Green).

Ozone machine is another option.

It will not get rid of all the smell, but you can improve things by sanding the unpainted surfaces of the cabinet. The outside bottom is especially easy to do. I'm not sure you want to bother with the lower half of the inside walls, but sanding the inside bottom could add a fresh wood scent to the mix. To do a better job, you can unscrew the parts, no complicated disassembly required, and you can do it in sections.

Another question.

Do plastic parts of a playfield pinball ( ramps, slingshot, etc... ) can go into a dishwasher to clean it all quick and easy ?
Or it is too much fragile, better to wash it manually ?

Maybe can get rid of bad smells this way, even for plastic parts !

La fumée de cigarette, ca imprègne n'importe quoi... !

Thanks !

Getting rid of the source of the smell is key.
I agree with the above post to give the game a good wipe-down with some mean-green. Use white paper towels or rags so you can see how much gunk is coming off.

Then, get one or two of those odour sponges (Air Sponge) from Canadian Tire. Throw into the game's cabinet and just let it go to work for a week or two. They come in little plastic tubs... like sour cream. Open the tub and just leave it in there until it looks dried out. This will better absorb the scent. Maybe stick one in the head too if it's really bad.

Most of the smell is from the wood... the most absorbent part of the machine.
Plastic stuff can just be wiped down, but I don't think it would have a big impact on the smell

I think you have to turn off the high water temp and heat dry cycles, but I agree with Drano, plastics are not the smelly parts.

Yep, that was me. Ever wonder what the difference is between SMART wash and QUICK wash on your dishwasher? About $300. :(
