Outdoorsmen Please Look Here

Postby Hammerhead » Wed Aug 08, 2018 11:44 am

I see a lot of you enjoy the outdoors, go camping, hiking or enjoy just getting outside. How concerned are you about ticks?

When I was young we went and played wherever we wanted and I had never even heard of a tick let alone lyme disease. Now it's all over the news and frankly it has me freaked out a bit. I found one on my 3 year old's back earlier this year and I almost had a heart attack!

Since we have a lot of people at work who are outside a lot they really stress the issue there, which doesn't help.

What are others' thoughts?

I am in the bush all the time. Cover up your legs and arms and you will be fine.

My cat has come home with a few this year as well.

Got bit by 3 ticks in April 2017 while trout fishing in Frontenac provincial park. 2 of them were removed after about 18 hours, the third not discovered until 32 hours had passed. They are so small you can't see them until engorged.
Removing them perfectly is difficult, but very important. I now have tick removal tools everywhere... house, truck, wallet etc.
I had to have blood tests right away, came back positive for Lyme, and I was put on heavy duty antibiotics for 3 weeks. Not fun.
I now wear long pants, sleeves, tape cuffs and spray down with deet bug juce when I go in the bush... then full check with flashlight upon return.
Two of my 3 bites are still visible after 17 months. Ticks suck, no pun intended.
Avoid at all cost.

Had a friend contract lyme disease over a decade ago when there was far less medical research on it. Totally derailed her life. :(
