OT: What would you do ? ( Car repair question)

Postby Steph » Sat Feb 09, 2019 1:32 pm

I have a 14 yr old Honda Pilot (2005) , which needs about $3500-$4000 worth of repair to do.
(cracked cylinder head) . I've been putting a lot of money for repairs lately
( $500 starter, $600 radiator, $500 alternator, brakes, new battery, etc.. ) ,
... it's been a great car and we love it (...right down to the cassette deck ! )
but at some point, I just need to cut my losses.

I was thinking that a $4000 repair bill was a pretty good time to do it .

So we went shopping for a new family car today...
HOLY CRAP !

I've got 3 growing boys, ... all playing hockey, so I need a mini-van or SUV type vehicle
with 3 rows of seating plus storage.

An entry level Honda (Pilot or Odyssey) is about $55K off the lot (A CRV is too small... )

A Dodge Caravan is about $35K all in ... but it's Dodge Caravan...
A Chrysler Pacifica (...very highly rated...) is about $43K all in.

Buying used ( 2017-2018 ) is an option, but comes with it's own set of hassles...

So all of a sudden, $4000 to get my PIlot fixed doesn't seem too too bad..

Thoughts ?

Also, any mechanics out there looking for a project other than pinballs ? ;-)

LMK,
Steph

Get a used vehicle with 4 years on it and save a chunk of change.

Or get a vehicle with 8 years on it and save more, but yeah, stuff will break at some point.

As for the Pilot, more stuff will break. Count on it. But 4k is steep for repairs...

My buddy got a Nissan SUV for 325 tax in monthly lease. Maybe this is an option for you.

Have been casually car shopping again to replace my 2005 Nissan X-Trail pin and family hauler. In the past I have done exactly as above. 4 years old used with as low KM as possible. Never from a dealer, always private sale.

I have rented and liked the Dodge Caravan GT model.... You can get them a couple years old for around $25K if memory serves.... Nice Mini Van if there is such a thing.
Leather seats and sto-and-go and decent power but yeah, Dodge Caravan.... And it was a pig on gas.

Honda and Toyota are cheaper used and will not depreciate as fast but expect to pay up to get into one. I was also shocked at what they cost even used. Not cheap.

One car you may want to look at used is a Nissan Pathfinder. They are a bit cheaper than the Pilot and Highlander..... I am probably going to end up with the Caravan or a Pathfinder when I eventually have to pull the trigger.

I'd be up for buying used, but my wife has a beef against that.
(...not sure why, but I think she doesn't like the idea having someone else's used goods... )

I found a new 2017 Caravan at the dealer for $27K. It's the loaded SVX+ model, with an MSRP of $43K discounted by $16K.
Tempting..., but I'm a little leery/suspicious as to why it's still on the lot...

I was surprised to read the comments on poor gas consumption.
Reviews says it's one of the best on gas with 30 MPG ( Honda was 22-24 MPG).
I rented a Caravan last summer and got almost 800km on one tank going to the US.

Good info guys... keep it coming...

Wife got a Subaru Forrester for her work car....we enjoy it so much we are going to buy it once she is up for another car. 3 boys + hockey means you need the Ascent....get a 1 or 2 year old version.

Honda vehicules are highly overrated in my opinion.
No surprises that you already made lots of repairs and at a high cost.
Better save tons of money with a used Caravan. Don't be hard on it and do all the recommended maintenance.
No vehicules is invincible but better save many thousands with a Caravan.

I agree with other poster. Buy used. Save huge.

I am looking at a car now, 2018 new is $15k more than a used with 12k on it. It's a no brainer. Buy new and lose the min you drive off the lot. Also love how the salesmen say your new car is the cats a$$ and when you try to sell it back, they say it's worthless etc etc.

For you Honda now, are you planning on junking it? If you don't repair it, it will be very hard to sell.

Any car you buy can be a headache. Buying a car these days sucks. I hate it. Leasing IMO is a total waste of money.

The fuel consumption comments are bullshit. The Caravan, for all it's quirks, had fantastic gas mileage. I had a 2012 and i even managed 1000kms once on a tank.

Put synthetic oil in the engine, and it is solid. My only issues were with the crappy brakes, which they upgraded in 2014.

Buy used, save a tonne. The newest car I've owned is 2010. My favorite family car is my old 2004 VW Passat Wagon. Fits 4 adults with room to spare! Lots of rear leg room.

Other option might be a complete used engine rather than replacing the head. Probably $3-400 for a wrecker engine and 8 hours labour.

My caravan gas mileage comments are from personal experience. Keep in mind that I rented the GT model and I think it has a bigger engine and more HP compared to other caravan’s.

Couple other things that may have impacted my mileage were the fact that it was fully packed with 2 pins and parts each way of the trip. And I drove it a bit hard as a rental so I am sure that moved the fuel needle a little faster if you know what I mean...
