I know it's not a new Stern but I brought home this gem a few weeks ago. Spent a lot of time cleaning it, putting titan competition rubbers on it and a playfield protector. Turned out decent and I absolutely LOVE this title :D

Pulled driver board, found cold solder. Fixed myself! (almost)

Pretty proud as I popped my solder cherry! and it worked!

Replaced a flipper coil and now hear the glass get smacked baby ! Nothing worse than a lame flipper.

Carry on.

Fixed an issue with Eightball's Harlem Globetrotters where the solenoids would get weak. Needed a few reflows under a connector on the driver board.

No issues so far with 1hr+ straight play!

Now to see what else I can fix on this machine while I have it :-D

Happy flipping folks!

I drank beer with Bally Boy, played some Viking and Stern's Kiss for the first time, and loaded up parts for a friend.

I really need to email people in advance that I am in town. LOL

Spent some time getting inserts to fit into Spitfire. My understanding is that inserts are put into the cut playfield and the whole thing is sanded down flush when initially built.
I measured 1" inserts (from PBR) at 1.003" with digital calipers. They are tapered so they will fit perfectly into the playfield hole and the excess is sanded off.
I measured the hole in my playfield at about 0.985" - 0.995". I sanded the insert edges to give the glue somewhere to bite and to remove mold marks, and then sanded the face down. I had to sand for quite a bit to get them to around 0.997". Around that point I was able to push them flush. Luckily I have to do this for only 7 inserts or so, my fingernails are hacked up now from accidentally sanding them!
White Water ~ Black Rose ~ Monopoly ~ DE Star Wars ~ Top Score ~ Heat Wave ~ Gay '90s ~ Dungeons & Dragons ~ Spitfire
