Finally gave a cleaning to the Stern POTC I picked up last week. I still can't believe, including the legs I'm buying off of Mitch for it, I scored a fully working pin of that caliber for less then $1300 US between the auction, shipping, and duty. My buddy Jay says I have horseshoes, ....I prefer to believe that good things happen to good people.

Alright, freakin horseshoes it is then.....

Nicely done!! I paid that just in taxes LOL. Score: Guard-1. Mike-0.

Cheers,

Just finishing up my Gottlieb Force II project. Had an issue with a flipper that I could figure out but Denis (Steamfitter) came by and he ended fixing it.
Thanks for your help Denis. And now I'm just doing the ground mods and cleaning it up.

I took a few mins and played Hollywood Heat today. I am really digging it. Multiball is super easy to get, but hard to keep. Just plain simple fun.

Would love a new translite, but like original. I like the kitsch factor.

Decided to "upgrade" some of the sound on my JP (Someone started the work on Pinside). Some of his audio choices are good. Others not so much. Guess I will have to dive into it if I want to make "my way".

So anyway to test out the audio calls I played a game. ONE game. Best game on JP yet. I was pretty happy especially after the shitty day I had trying to play it lol.

Middle earth has been acting up. A couple of new edge connectors, and tracing back a intermittent issue with the sound generation circuit: lots of random static and getting worse daily. Started scoping out to find the source of the issue before cashing it in for the evening. Progress delayed whenever it’s working right! Probably a marginal 74xx chip somewhere. Wheee!

A-ha! A 41 year old CD4016 quad bilateral switch being used as the gain control in the circuit is intermittently allowing VDD to bleed through onto pin 13 from pin 14. Confirmed that there's no metal shaving bridging the gap and nope, this chip is fit for the bin. Off to Jameco for some replacements.

God bless good schematics.

Arrived home today to a nice surprise: not one but two awaited packages!

The second is a later post, but the first is the watchmaker’s secret weapon: Nye 140-B Synthetic Clock Oil. This oil is super-penetrating, non-volatile, and non-gumming: perfect for use in reducing gears and bearings needing lubrication.

Nye 140-B Synthetic Clock Oil

I’ve been having an ongoing issue with my InterFlip Dragon that I decided had to be put in check: the horizontal player selector assembly has been plagued with slow operation and needed a proper de-greasing and lubrication… a perfect test for my horological helper.

Grease on the rotor

Look at all that grease on the rotor! :FP: After complete disassembly of the motor and reducing gear, a judicious application of lubricant, and a rapid reassembly, Dragon is back in action and snaps effortlessly between players.

A well-lubed clock is a happy clock. Don’t see any reason why the clockwork in our games shouldn’t get the same attention.

I spent some time looking for a new translite for Hollywood Heat... but alas no luck. Only a couple of shitty alternate translites that don’t mirror the “Miami Vice” vibe.

I am surprises that no one offers any repros of these. Must be the lawyer that owns GTB that is blocking this. Kinda sucks, tbh. I will try to keep looking, but not very hopeful.

Did a little bit of board work on my Atari Middle Earth.

IMG_9316.JPG

Replaced a janky socket for the sound PROM, but that minor compared to the installation of a brand new knocker!

Atari never put knockers in any of their pinball games, probably to reduce the cost of construction. They did, however, provide for an audit system for operators, as their games had no persistent RAM to keep those totals. An operator could install a few transistors, resistors, and diodes to keep track of coin drops and replays on mechanical counters... but the same counter outputs can also be modified to drive the coil of a solenoid!

IMG_9317.JPG

By adding TIP101 transistors to Q10 and Q19, 1N914 diodes to CR10 and CR17, and 200 ohm 1/4W resistors at R21 and R25, the missing drive circuitry is installed. All that remains is to pop a couple of 2A SB fuses in the fuse board and solder a couple of new pins into the edge connector at 17&20 and you're in business!

IMG_9320.JPG

It's hella loud! Fantastic!

Now THAT is some serious next-level hacking! Games without knockers are always disappointing: Even if the game is great, it is a barrier to purchase for me. Fantastic work!
