Northstar Pinball bar (Montreal), no free games

Talk about anything that you would like.

Do you think North Star should restore extra-ball and replay settings?

Northstar Pinball bar (Montreal), no free games

Postby mbudman » Mon Jan 06, 2020 7:08 pm

I went to Northstar last night for the first time this year. Very disappointed!!! The new machines no longer give free games or extra balls. These features are an important aspect of pinball and are part of what makes it exciting. Come on guys wake up!!!

Without these features, it makes pinball playing less attractive. The thrill of getting the skill shot for an extra ball or winning a free game is part of pinball; not having it is like have a car without wheels.

I would like everyone who agrees with me to go Northstar's facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/northstarpinball/ and post your opinions on such a stupid move.

Bring back real pinball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

Mark

It is not a question of being good, it is not possible to even win a free game or make a skill shot for extra ball. The pinball machines at Northstar no longer provide the opportunity to win an extra ball or the chance to win a free game.

Adam (one of the owners) explained that Northstar needs a permit (from Quebec) on each pinball that is to give a free game or extra ball. Without the permit, these features have to be disabled.

Northstar has decided not to purchase the permits and therefore disabled these features!!!!!!!!!!

The cost for the permit is not unreasonable.

Bring real pinball to Northstar!!!!!!!

I agree with you Mark, the points are one thing but beeing able to win a game to perform better is not negotiable, neither the extraball. Very sad decision from the North Star......I really don't understand, knowing these guys are pioneers in pinball's revival......

So... you want them to pay... to give you free games? Lol does sound weird.

Regardless. Not a factor for me. I enjoy playing them and aiming for a good score.

Yeah, but they get the tax back...

Less than $3/ week per machine

Do it right or don't do it at all....

Lol you are taking me put of context. Notice the “ lol “ after my comment.

And my opinion is just that. Mine. But this said, I do understand where Mark is coming from. But... seriously? It is only 145$ per year? That is just wrong if the intention is to save that.

I understand that this setting is more tournament-oriented, but nevertheless it is a narrow-minded and borderline arrogant “f*ck the establishment” attitude that will cost more business than they would save.

The tournament-oriented crowd is a smaller percentage of the potential clientele. By doing so, you will end up alienating a large percentage of your patrons in order to save so little.

If it were like the old fees at 450$+ per year, I would kinda understand. But for so little, the cost will outweigh the saving.

Pay the small fees, boys. Turn on the knockers.

BTW they were paying the old fees and giving extra ball and games. So now, they went all the way cheap !!! not happy with that decision !!! Winning a free play has been part of playing Pinball forever !!!

Hello to all,

Please forgive the editing of the title, Mark, and to everyone for adding a poll. But in this instance, with opinions being erased on FB, it is important for all to have their say.

So, if you feel that it is wrong for The electronic pins to not have extra balls and free games, please vote for either option, and post your opinion here.

No comments will be deleted. Please keep it clean.

The poll is a bit biased. :)

This outrage is misplaced. Businesses like bars operate on razor thin margins to begin with, this one in particular invests way more heavily in their clients' enjoyment than any other place would, by a large amount. I make a point of stopping in Montreal just for the Northstar, every time I travel to Quebec or Ontario because of the great games, the great staff, and the great vibe in the place.

Pins are not cheap, maintenance is regular and costs time and money. If they move 40 machines through that place over the course of a year, which seems like a conservative guess, then you're looking at an additional $6,000 in expense that just got levied on them in a tax grab by the prpvince. $6,000 per year may well make the difference between solvency and insolvency for a place like this. The outrage would be better placed against the province and city that is constantly putting the squeeze on small businesses like this for more money. Free balls and free games are nice, but the games are just as fun without them, and the only options may well be no free games or no games at all.

Not a deal breaker for me... I'll play at NorthStar regardless. It is kind of a nice pat on the back to get a free game every now and then. They can set the free game score fairly high to avoid people just running up free credits.

Sounds like that's still going to lead to additional expenses for them though. The problem is not the free games or free balls, it's the cost per license per machine to allow free games.

In the 80’s it was 0,25$ a game and all the pinballs had a permit. Now it’s 1$ and they want to cheap on free games and extraballs?
Come on.

It was set up to merely give a place for people to anonymously vote their opinion, and not vote if indifferent, but works either way. Fixed, and still unbiased.

Location pinball without the chance to win a free game just feels wrong to me. I am planning to hit the North Star this Saturday, and this news will in no way change my plans, but I must say I am a tad bummed to learn this...I had visions of winning a game or two :D

That said, if there was a way to activate the knocker upon a high score without awarding the free play....that would make it almost ok for me. I need to hear the sweet, sweet sound of that knocker!

I have a pretty good collection yet I still enjoy playing location games. The only reason I go out to play location games is the fact that it still gives me a rush to earn an extra ball or a free game through a high score or a match. Take that away and I have zero motivation to go and play public machines.

The best memory I ever had at North Star was playing Roberts Golden Arrow and seeing how many Specials I could rack up by nailing the Golden Arrows. Those days are sadly gone now.
