Final Lap... or is it? LOL

Post by Sparky »

It's fall of 1987. I am walking along Centennial Plaza in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, right in front of my house. School just ended for the day, and I decided to head to Pinocchio's Arcade for a quick couple of games. With a 2-dollar bill in pocket for cleaning up my room the weekend before, I am about to be on cloud nine for a few minutes.

So I enter inside what I considered to be paradise at the time... still do to an extent. Side note... I am saddened to see how deprived kids are today of such a social environment. But that is another discussion...

I pass through the door and am greeted with the ever familiar onslaught of audio and visual cacophony. And about 10 steps in, I see a change. No longer are present the undisturbed row of upright cabinets along the right-side wall. A gap has been formed. 6 cabinets are gone, only to be replaced by Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Ivan Capelli. Formula 1 drivers in... FINAL LAP.

4 driving seats.... LINKED. And I am not talking about sharing a screen here... these were 4 different screens. And you can see you opponents in your screen, even your rear view mirrors.

Well, I sat down in it and immediately 3 other guys jumped in.

I was hooked.

My 2-dollar bill in quarters lasted all of 20 minutes, but I didn't care. I played that thing every week. I always took the Williams and I immediately grew a porn stache and was Nigel fucking Mansell, albeit for 4 minutes.

I was sad 3 years later when the Final Laps were retired, but I had moved away and didn't go back to an arcade for years after.

Fast forward a few years, and I end up in Darkdog's basement for an MPL meeting. The pins were great, but... we played Daytona like a bunch of kids. It was wild. And it got me thinking of Final Lap again.

So... I bought one from Alouette. LOL They had one that they got back from the government. It had been seized for 25 years. I brought it home, and with the help of DaveW, we dragged it downstairs. I did tell myself "never again", but I was lying to myself. LOL.

And with a bit of tinkering, I was NIgel Mansell again!

But wait... there's more... LOL

I found a second Final Lap in Kingston...

And a third in Mirabel a few weeks ago.... :FP:

Could I aim for a Grand Slam? Mehbeh... gotta find one though.

But... this would be insane...
FL flyer.jpg
Who knows... I have a 30ft wall in my basement that could accomodate them. LOL

But... in the meantime, I have actually found 4 Final Lap 2 boardsets. They are the same as Final Lap, but have an extra daughter board for the FL2 roms. Same game, but 4 tracks instead of just the Suzuka track. Hmm....

I do like the Final Lap cab better as the speakers are in the seats. Smaller 19" screens, but that just makes them more repairable for me. LOL. And lighter to bring down the stairs. :FP:

So... I will post pics here of progress on the cabs. I intend to put the 3 together today. I want to get them all 100% for the first Borderland meeting of 2021, post-vaccine of course.

Gives me something else to look forward to...

So..... anyone have a Final Lap for sale? LOL

Reading your story brought back memories of that excitement and anticipation I would have when a new game arrived at Pinnochio or Marché de l'Ouest. I remember skipping class on the day that MK2 was supposed to arrive at Pinnochio. When I showed up, the game hadn't arrived yet, and I waited around until it did and until it was set up.

Well, I moved around 42 machines tonight in an effort to reorganize for a future change in the household. So I took the opportunity to test Final Lap 5/6. It plays great, but won't link when the cab is alone. The switch on the link board seems to not work. I had this issue on FL 1/2 and it ended up being a dirty connector. 5/6 had been in storage for 15 years so it is possible. But it might work when linked to other cabs. I will see.

That is the plan tomorrow. Move 1/2 and 3/4 where 5/6 is. Should be fun.

Games are mostly all placed but it is a mess. Gonna take some effort.

Progress!!
20201209_220808.jpg
A thing of beauty! So, games are in place. I tried linking them but found a couple of small issues.

Final Laps have a small board at the back with 2 RCA jacks and a switch. This is what is used to link games. The switch has to be up if one cab alone, or down and wired together if linked.

When alone, if switch is up, it will say LINK 2 in test mode. If the switch is down and not linked, the units are independent and says LINK OFF. But if wired together, it should say LINK 6.

Well, I had everything wired and switches down and it said LINK OFF.

I found that cab 1/2 was switching status with the switch, but not cab 3/4 and 5/6. Cab 3/4 stayed as LINK 2, as if switch was up. So, bad switch. As for cab 5/6, it stayed LINK OFF until I operated the switch 20 times. That did it. Shitty fix, but good for now.

So, I wired cans 1/2 and 5/6. Now says LINK 4 in test.

I will take a quick look at the board on 3/4 this weekend. But I bought a wiring harness 5 months ago on Ebay, and it has a link board on it.

So... things are looking good!!!

Ok... progress... somewhat. Lol

So since I couldn't get the link board on the second cab to connect to the 2 others, I took it off to take a look....

.... great Caesar's ghost!!!!
20201210_162454.jpg
Wow... just wow....

So, I installed the one I got with a complete wiring harness. Result? Well, inconclusive. This one does the opposite. It stays on LINK OFF, and also will not communicate with the others.

So, now I will install that board in another cab to see if the issue is the board (if problem transfers), or wiring (of it works in another cab.

Stay tuned... but I may look for another board. Lol

Ok, so I started by simply cleaning the connectors. Shop towel folded around a credit card, and soaked in 99% alcohol for connector cleaning, and just a rag with alcohol for the card edges.

And?

YEEAAAAH BOYYYYYYY
20201210_191813.jpg
Ok. Off to assemble 2 control panels, and then repin speaker connectors!!
