Metropolis robot + mods for Gottlieb GENESIS
Hey guys,
I thought I would share this fun and relatively easy little mod for my recently acquired Genesis.
I am a big fan of the silent film Metropolis. It's no secret that designer John Trudeau was heavily influenced by this movie when creating the game. The playfield artwork is literally ripped from the movie's scenes and the robot that gets revealed is loosely based on the robot "Maria" or "Hel" from the film also.
Sadly, the rest of the game's artwork takes no direction from the movie.
One of the things I wanted to try and do was to replace the simple vacuum formed robot with one that was more accurate to the film. I couldn't find any suitable figures online so I located a reasonable 3D model on Thingiverse made by user: Larry009 and I printed it on my 3D printer.
After a little cleanup and some paint, I had a pretty usable model.
Here's how it looks now.
Hope you like it.

Thanks guys.
Still trying to figure out what to do with the translite and speaker panel... but the goal will be to tie the whole game/theme together a lot better.

Super cool!
One of the only things I did not like about Genesis were the ramps. The purple just seemed to not work. Has anyone ever thought of redoing them as translucent, or a different colour?
I like the playfield art on this game a lot, and the Metropolis alternative backglass that's out there is wonderful.

You mean like this?
I also added the chrome T-molding and I have plans to cover up the pink stripes on the cab with 3/4" chrome tape as well.
The speaker panel and translite will take a bit more work.
The game hasn't been sopped yet. I'm waiting on new targets, clear Titan rings and a few other bits and pieces before I tear it down and clean up the playfield.

Re: Metropolis robot mod for Gottlieb GENESIS
Yeah, I started privately bugging Mark to make these ramps three years ago, before I finally got a Genesis! I helped with the Cliffy's too.cait001 wrote:Super cool!

Oh wow that is SO MUCH BETTER! You get to see all that artwork underneath, it really makes the game shine!Drano wrote: You mean like this?

Re: Metropolis robot mod for Gottlieb GENESIS
I did a little application on my cabinet using some 3/4" chrome tape and some chrome adhesive vinyl. All modifications are reversible but I wanted to see how the game would look if I got rid of most of the pink. I also added the chrome T-molding on the head, so it all goes together a bit better.
Down the road I'd love to work on a custom translite and speaker panel, but it can wait.
Maybe I'll get lucky and find someone parting out an old Gottlieb ROCK. That game has the exact same speaker panel and apron, but in blue. It would be a much better fit for the genesis playfield art.
