Why oh why do people do this??????
Why do people do this and paint over beautiful artwork???
After about 30 minutes and some elbow grease I see a race car driver peaking back over nasty black paint!
Slowly but surely her beauty is starting to show through. The paint on the base was a LOT thicker than the back box but I see race cars! My arm is KILLING me and I think I'm a bit STONED!!

Baffling, I assume when the cabinets have been painted over it is because they were in bad shape. Meh!pinhead wrote:Wow, the art was pretty nice. It is a shame people do this and why?...

I bought a pin once that someone decided to cover with paisley coloured interior wallpaper. Guess they thought it would blend into the room better, who knows.
At least it was easier to steam-off than stripping paint!

Well Sparky, things are going good. I was approached by Dave Astill to repair a pile of pin boards so I thought I'd pop by to see what's new in the hobby.Sparky wrote:HOLY COW! ToMMy!!! Re: Why oh why do people do this??????
I got this 'special' edition woodrail from Kevin a while back.
I love that someone went to the trouble of, not only covering the entire cab in this lovely maroon paint and painting the wood trim silver, but also adding some beautiful stencilling/decals all over it.
Luckily I REALLY loved the game play on this one or else I'd have really had to think twice about it.
The re-painting is on my long term to-do list... but I'm REALLY not looking forward to it.
There was a fully pleather upholstered wedgehead or some other single player EM not too long ago. I think it was an old Williams.
That one was pretty 'special' too!

Wow, that's just... Heck, I don't even know what to say. Someone really had a vision, I'll say that. Not a good vision, but a vision..Drano wrote:I got this 'special' edition woodrail from Kevin a while back.

It takes a certain kind of special to paint over a woodrail!

Re: Why oh why do people do this??????
Perhaps I, myself, am one of "those people" who do this? On my first game, Meteor, purchased in 2000 (don't worry, the cabinet art is fine!), I painted the coin-door black. It was rusty, looked like ass, and I didn't have the knowledge (or time!) to restore it properly. With so much to fix on the game (it was a barn-find, and had literal cow-manure on the exterior, and mud-wasp nests inside), I put my efforts into the stuff that mattered (like fixing basically every board in the bloody game -- I suspect it had experienced a significant over-voltage at one point, maybe even a lightning strike). Painting that ugly coin-door black made the game look much better, and I was too naive in the hobby to realize that many would find it an abomination (hello, Geoff!). I also added an external volume control and headphone-jack cleverly (I thought at the time!) placed in two of the unused coin-slots in the bezel. The volume control is great and I use it all the time. The headphone-jack not so much! Anyways, here's my bastardized coin-door for your viewing pleasure:
I should probably hunt-down a better condition Stern coin-door someday and de-restore my game, but as I'm never going to sell my precious Meteor, I won't be inflicting the "paint it black" edition on anyone else, so I'm content with it as it is for now.Grant Goodes

Nice job on the Rockmakers, but it wasn't a member of the Paint It Black club, as were most of the other examples on this thread. Hard to tell if that was just a half-assed repaint job, or a repurposed cabinet from a different game (suspecting the former).

Second side of the cab done. This one went MUCH faster now that I know what I'm doing. She's not going to win any beauty contests but I like it!

it's original , used paint stripper to find original art work then traced it with tracing paper......
