Bad planking :( You will need to paint the whole thing to "hide it". Big Brave indeed.

I think a lot of it depends on how much you want to put into it... if this game was particularly valuable to me, I might consider scanning the whole thing and reworking it digitally. Then, I'd be able to have a hardtop printed and lasercut. How much it will cost depends on what skills you can already bring to the table.

Restoration still in process.

Playfield was scan.

File ready to send to print chop.

I am also working in fusion360 on a new playfield.

I will probably keep the original playfield and just make a new one.

So you're going to CNC cut it? Cool. I think Classic Playfield Reproductions might sell blanks.

I have easy access to cnc machine. Today I order bag of playfield inserts. Now my question is what will be the best wood to use for the playfield?

Keep the old playfield and inserts, reglue them, sand the playfield and apply the new overlay.
Personnaly i would sand slightly the playfield to remove the planking and repaint it 100%. There's almost no details on this artwork, not an heavy job to my eyes and that way it will still look original and more valuable than a digital printed overlay.

Thanks for all your input!! It is all ways help full!

Three reasons why’s i am going building new playfield.

-First for the challenge!! Restoring pinball machine is a hobby. I know the digital art work will never give value and never close to original look.

-second i will like to keep the old playfield and give a try to restore original art work. This will take time for me and not sure if i will ever be able to make something that look close to some restoration you guy’s have done.right now this machine is all apart in my workshop and i need space.

-third using sand paper on original playfield is something i can’t put my minds doing. For me those original playfied are like a Monet or Van gogh!!!

For the wood, next week i will stop at langevin and ask them what cold be the best option.

The playfield is made of 1/2inch russian birch plywood.
Original playfield was scan. Playfield overlay was print in local print shop on vinyl. Board was cut on cnc machine thanks to one of my friend!!!

First i glue all insert then varnish the playfield.
I use this for the first coat

https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catal ... over/clear

Then i use epoxy for the final coating.

https://www.ecopoxy.com/uvpoxy/

There’s is alot of discussion regarding using epoxy on playfield. So i decided to make my own opinion and use epoxy.

At first i was going to put another clear coat on top of epoxy. But i will try whit out this extra coat.

I will juste use wax.

I will let you guys know the results.

I see from your post that you created your own overlay. How were you able to scan in everything to scale and stitch it together?

I have the same scanner as you do, but there has always been problem of getting the holes and scale to match up to the original. I use photoshop CS6 and tried Microsoft ICE. I also tried different scanners

I do have access to a book scanner that can scan a playfield in two steps vs. the HP scanner at my office.

By the way, I bought a printer capable of printing the overlay as one piece as my printer can print 3 feet by 150 feet.

Where are you located? I am in Montreal.

Thanks,

Mark
