Wurlitzer 1100 in between 40’s and 50’s

Post by redketchup »

What did you do when you are bored at home during the pandemic… you restore a jukebox!

Next one on the bench is a Wurlitzer 1100, produced from 1947 to 1949, the first one after the WWII often called the bomber because of his shape…

This model mark a break on the forty’s Art Deco look with a more modern look of the fifty’s

24 selections, 78 rpm

As always everything start with tearing everything apart!

Chrome to GG Buffing
Powdercoat to MR performance

I start cleaning and repaint some parts

The aluminum front door will need a special treatment, will talk about it later

Here we go again! Nice!

How many jukes do you own now? Over the years I have seen you talk about/show/display quite a few. They are very nice and some of them are true works of art.

no problem, he was sick... so that's ok... We bought our first jukebox when I was 15. He send me to my first trip to new york at 19 year old to bring our W700 (i stil have it in my bedroom) in 1993. We have a lot of awesome story about jukebox after all this years... He like to find them, but he didn't have any talent for repairing or restoring... I always have a bunch of stuff to repair when I go see him :D

The one i did right now was his favorite one... pretty sure i see him smile up there.

The front door stories....

the front door is a real headache since a start this project. Originally there is a woodgrain patern paint on the aluminium front door.

Photo 2021-10-22 16 25 42.jpg
Photo 2021-10-22 16 25 45.jpg
There is nobody doing that anymore and I don't want to try it myself... to complicated. Most of the restorer now put a vinyl decal to replace it... I had this kind of vinyl on mine, my father did it couple year ago.

I alway find that doesn't look right, but if it's the only option, i will do it that way.

After some research i found a new process call hydro dipping.

I only find one place around montreal who did this and my door is pretty big, so i don't know if it's will fit in the bath... So i take an appointment and go there with my door. It's bike paint shop, so after looking at me like and extraterrrest, The boss is finally agree to do my door. We found this film who look pretty close to the original pattern, maybe little bit lighter
Photo 2021-11-05 09 11 09.jpg
there is a lot of preparation to the door before the dipping. Taping, rimer, wet sandind, dipping and clearcoat.

Photo 2021-11-05 09 10 52.jpg
We should see the result soon, but i have a lot of hope in this processs...

Probably, when the juke was new, it was probably lighter as well, wood pattern gets yellowish over the years, a little like wooden floors, I think you are right on with the color considering this.

Today i glue the foil inside the cab, did it when the cab is on his side, a lot easier, use 77 contact spray glue. One coat on the cab and one on the foil… should stay there forever!
