Genesis. 2 issues. Robot bot energizing and etc

Get the robot and doesn't turn. I checked everything in the short time I had where the game is (at a friends)
The gears aren't stuck. I get about 14vdc on either terminal of the motor. I don't know if that's proper or not. There's a (I think ) zener diode on the motor coil. Is it that?
ther's also a v shaped piece of metal that goes to the horseshoe shaped part of that motor. I dont know what you call it. The V piece is supposed to sit flush in 2 grooves. This one does not. I tried and tried but couldn't get it to sit exactly right. Is it that??? Have a look at your robot cover motor. You'll see what I mean. I read in some pinterest forum some guy talking about that piece.
I haven't poked my head under a Genesis for years so I pretty much forget a lot of it.
Which leads me to the 2nd thing
The three letters at the top when the ball enters, I used to be able to change the order with the flippers. So you can advance etc.
Not they don't change.
I remember this happened before when I owned that machine but I was able to fix it. Except now I have non dea what I did.
What makes that stop working properly?
