Blue Note Score Motor

Post by Guard »

Finally got around to working on my Blue Note a couple weeks ago. Rectifier blew over the summer and it got replaced last week.
Got about 10 games in and the score motor started turning endlessly.
Gone over just about everything I can think of [not a schematic guy, just go with things that don't look right] Anyways I'm down to every Jones plug on the game unconnected while trying to isolate, and the motor is still turning right from power on.
Only way it stops is to hit the tilt switch right beside the motor [ power]. I have the schematics but I'm not sure where to go from where I'm at....
PINS- Hit The Deck/Bluenote / Stern POTC/ DE Star Wars/ Big Hit/ Algar/Asteroid Annie and the Alians/Slugfest/Batman The Dark Knight/Dirty Harry/ World Poker Tour/Swords of Fury/Ripleys BION/Striker Xtreme/NASCAR/Elvis/Whirlwind/ The Getaway/The Uncanny Xmen/Corvette

RIP- Sinbad/ Supersonic

It's the AX relay! It's always the AX relay.... *grumbling*

Do you have a scan of the schematics? I need them for my archives. I can also take a look at the signal path

Score motor continuously running indicates a stepper or contact not at its expected 'resting' position.

Does the score motor stop if the head's Jones connectors are disconnected?
If yes, Cait001's 'AX' might be a possibility - or a relay unlatching it.

I have the original schematics and they are huge. Biggest ones I've ever seem, don't think one pic could catch enough of it to be useful.

I have the motor score switch page also, but not the manual with start up sequence.

With everything connected the AX relay is unlatching constantly so the AX cannot do its thing. If I manually hold it in everything resets as it should but motor keeps turning and unlatching the AX relay.

my troubleshooting method: identify all of the switches that trigger the motor to run.
you have already tested with the jones plug out, so you can safely ignore any of the triggers in the backbox.
go through the remaining switches that get the motor running and see which ones are currently pulled in / latched. Switches that that latch on to run the motor have a condition that causes them to de-energize. It is often a pulse through one of those that is being flaky and not letting the signal through the would break the circuit and release the motor.
You can gently poke the closed switches to see if makes it stop (the surface contact improves so when the pulse comes through on the next cycle it de-energizes)
Some gaps that should be open might still be closed, and you can (gently) test that with the chopstick too.

Also make sure the score motor 'park' position (I think it is switch 1C) properly opens at every 1/3 turn when cam is in its notch.
I assume you already/also checked that the coin switches are not stuck closed inside the cash door

I'm no help with schematics but that left flipper position is something I have never seen. Probably more of a right drainer...

That's why they only made 229 of them,....the offset flippers didn't go over well.

Does the machine add points on its own while you are playing? If so there could be a stuck switch.
Same issue if you disconnect the playfield to cabinet and cashdoor to bottom board Jones plugs?

It scores normally.
I'm honestly thinking coin door. One slot mech is still there and one isn't, the switch where there is no mech will add games but the one with a mech does nothing. Coil does pull in on the door...

Thanks to all those who gave ideas for my Blue Note problem. My buddy Jay Horst came over and we started really digging into the switches, and found continuity where there shouldn't have been on about the 3rd one in. Traced it back to the "O" relay and, to the naked eye' the switched looked good. But the multimeter said different and after quite a bit of adjusting it finally cried "Uncle" and away we went.

I let the pf slip one time onto the score motor, destroying the switches at 4D but now I'm thinking it clipped the O relay also but I didn't see it. The only thing left is to re-fix one switch at 4D that keeps the pop bumper lights on.....it wants to stay open after rotation instead of snapping back.
Been a few years since I've shopped it so that'll be tomorrows job..
