Slate was used for Grey in wire colour coding because Grey and Green started with the same 3 letters. Even though Green is often abbreviated GN, and Grey is GR, but you can see how people would think GR is Green. Green is commonly used for ground so confusing Green with Grey probably would (and did) lead to lawsuits. Slate was chosen for Grey instead. Slate is a type of rock, and rocks are well... grey. They had their best people working on this I guess. Ha!
