Prices of pins

Post by MJ »

Is it only me, or are the prices of used pins just plain crazy?

It seems that NIB pins are cheaper to buy these days.

Generally prices of used games follow the price of new games. Makes sense, the old games are an alternative to those considering buying a pinball. Good for those in the hobby. Not so good if you are joining the hobby.

Then there are games that have always been more than a Pro version. The Williams A titles. Been like that for decades. I don't see that changing.

I agree prices are insane and I used to think the bubble would burst any day. Now I just accept it and shake my head. I cann't believe a Pro with taxes is now over $9K and they are selling. But we are living in a world of hyper inflation and extreme supply side issues.

Agreed with Sparky....... I had moved on to Mopeds from the 70's and 80's almost 5 years ago , the reason I sold almost all of my mopeds 2 months go is that they were taking up all of my time on repairs, adjustments and such at the point that I had no time for my wife and kids anymore, now I have 1 pinball machine and I want it to stay that way.

My $6.5K BSD was a $4.5K players condition machine + $2k parts + 100 hours of free labour. I don't recommend this as a way to get rich for anybody!

When I started collecting 5 years ago I tried to focus on 90s unpopular B Titles cause the prices were still reasonable. Nowadays even the unpopular B titles goes for 5-6k. It's at the point were your better just add couple more grands and have a NIB.

I was offered 5k for my Diner last year and I thougt the guy was crazy. I sold it feeling bad for him but since then I saw a couples for sale in worse condition for 5.5k+...

At least I only have 2 more 90s games on my wishlist...
Own:Who Dunnit / Black Knight SOR premium / Baywatch / Junk Yard / Houdini / Bram Stoker's Dracula
Looking for: Black Rose
Gone: Diner / Hurricane

And by today’s prices that was a good deal. I was sooooo tempted but I managed to resist. It was hard.

When the after-tax price of a new Stern Pro clocks in at about $9500 it's not hard to see why all pins are getting pricier. It is getting rather frothy out there.

HUO Medieval Madness are a bargain now compared to the Royal Edition MMRs! Just insane prices on those in the secondary market.

One thing that is constant though is EMs. I love playing them and the prices have barely moved on any but the most sought-after.
For anyone spurned by the solid-state game inflation, I highly recommend stocking up on a few winter EM projects. They remain one of the purest parts of the hobby. It doesn't get ruined by inflation and the feelings that money can stir, you can experiment more freely with wood and playfield restoration techniques, and almost anything is fixable.

Yes, the hobby is losing it’s lustre due to the prices. I have only bought 1 pin (Williams IJ in almost 4 years). Thanks to that and Covid I have been getting back more into motorcycling - every weekend from May to October. Starting to lose my interest now that you can’t pick up a B list title for $2500 and fix it up to pass the winter months. Oh well, life moves on so you just go with the flow.

Prices are what they are.
They always have been and will be.

If you love it, buy it.
Keep it, don't speculate.

I have had very good advice from great members for over a decade now.
Buy what you like, buy what you can afford. Don't listen to what others do.

Cheers. Salut.
All the very best.

I think that the rediculous prices that were paid at the auction from that museum that closed a few weeks ago are already starting to make there affect on the market, I was looking for a Twilight Zone to eventually buy one day......, on Pinside they were ranging from 7500$ USD to 10000$ USD before the auction with only 1 at 10000, now they are from 9000$ USD to 15000$ USD (the one at 15000$ was deleted because it already sold) with only one at 8200$ USD and 3 at over 12000$ USD. I was offered a Riply's Beleive It Or Not from a member here for over 7000$, I answered that he had convinced me that after 4 years out of the hobby, I should go back and take that same door out of the hobby I took over 4 years again.

I feel your pain. I was out for 10 years. Got back in 2019 and paid more than double what I had sold my last STTNG to get one back and it was non-working(albeit minor issue).

At the time I thought prices were insane but glad I bit the bullet because they got so much worse. I also find that with the influx of noobs into the hobby, people seem to not understand the relationship between condition and value. Everybody wants top dollar for their games whether fully working or not. It’s what drove me to go NIB.

I’ve also given up on Wms/Bally A list games like TZ. No way I am paying that much for a game when a newer Stern offers so much more for less money.

this 100%.
I can't believe people are paying the prices they are for Sega and Data East machines when for like $1-2k more they can get a Stern Pro machine with so much more gameplay.

Looks like there is a new crowd out there. Guys that have loads of money. They could care less about the price. They want it, they will out bide anyone to get it, 10k, 14k, 16k no problem, still peanuts.

One guy in QC paid 12k for a TSPP. Money was secondary. He just wanted the title for his kids.
