Getting started on a Mata Hari that I picked up a year ago. It’s been staring me in the face, and over the holidays I got enough of my loose ends tied up that I can finally get started.
Ultrasonic cleaner is fired up, and now I’ll break it down bit by bit. First job is always to start with the deep clean.
Metal parts from the face are in, and that will let me start working on the door. What a difference five minutes with a magic eraser makes:
Here is the first coil mech to take a bath: the knocker, which will close the work on the head for now. I already reworked the displays and boards a few months ago.

There wasn’t much to do. Everything got a dip in the ultrasonic, and after a rinse the coil sat for a couple of days in the drying chamber. Threw out the old and incorrect coil sleeve and installed one with the retaining ring in the middle. The metal bits on this machine are still quite shiny so far, so I haven’t pulled out the tumbler yet. New labels thanks to inkochnito and we’re back in business. Everything underneath the playfield is going to get the same treatment.
Aaaaaand I just realized reading the labels that the incorrect knocker coil was previously installed too. Should have taken a closer look when evaluating the machine. Going to have to order up the right ones. Rookie mistake.
My good friends: buy yourselves an ultrasonic cleaner and vibratory tumbler and you’ll never again worry about what to do with your hours and hours of free time.
It’s an improvement! Now I just have to repeat that with every mech left in the game. Slow and steady wins the race; one mech at a time.
Had to order a bunch of e-clips and connecty-bits; as I pull this game apart I’m undoing forty years of quick fixes.

After running the coils through the ultrasonic, I use the compressor to blow the cleaning solution out. It smells like a whole ashtray when I do it. Nasty.
