carving rebound rubbers?

Post by cait001 »

An EM rebound rubber has the thickness and bounciness I need for a few applications, but it's the wrong shape. I've tried carving them before, but with poor results.
Anyone have tips on how to slice and reshape rebound rubbers for other replacements?

The first rubbers I need to replace are for my smartball machines. I'm only now realizing a rebound rubber might be too short.
For the smartball games I need a 20mm tall rubber with a 18-19mm diameter. Any idea what I could use there?

The other use I was thinking was pachinko rebound rubbers. The inner thickness of the rebound rubber is the proper size to "punch out" rebound rubbers, but I have no idea how to carve them properly. I tried with this one, but it was really difficult to saw it with an exacto blade, and gave up trying to even bother shaping it.

Probably a bit too thick for an inexpensive laser cutter.

3/4" hole saw? Remove the drill bit from the center and just use the saw. Drill press will keep it straight. 3/4" = 19mm

I have to confess I do not know about the saws that both of you mention. :)

And does anyone have an idea of a rubber that could work for replacing the smartball one? 20mm tall is taller than a rebound rubber... (needs to also be 19mm diameter circle)

Sharpened piece of EMT and a hydraulic press. You want to punch this, not tear or cut it.

You can 3d print different rubbers: https://all3dp.com/2/3d-print-rubber-is ... -possible/

Honestly though a crank vise, a new rebound rubber, and a piece of thin-walled EMT filed to sharpness is gonig to be fine. I have 3/4" EMT. Give me a fresh rebound rubber and I'l destroy it for you.
